Velvet Caladium
Velvet Caladium (Caladium 'Velvet Touch') is a species of plants in the Araceae family native to tropical South America and Central America. It is known for its beautiful heart-shaped leaves with bright, bold colors that light up any space. Its foliage may have green, pink, white or red colors, sometimes all combinations. It is usually grown as a houseplant and needs enough light and certain conditions to thrive. It can be a beautiful addition to any room or garden.
Caladiums like to stay moist at all times but not overly wet. Keeping the soil evenly moist but allowing the top soil to dry slightly before watering again. During very hot or dry conditions when the plant is actively growing, watering may need to be more frequent. Overwatering can lead to root rot or leaf spots.
Velvet Caladium enjoys bright, indirect light most. Lights which mimic natural light is best. It tolerates both direct sunlight and some shade but will need protection from the full midday sun during summer months. Being kept in too shady conditions may lead to sparse, leggy foliage.
Caladiums prefer temperatures between 70-85°F (20-30°C). They can tolerate slightly colder temperatures for a short period of time, although they may lose their foliage. Too hot or cold temperatures can cause Caladium leaves to brown and die off.
They prefer a high level of moisture in the air; anything under 50% can cause their foliage to become crispy. To help increase humidity you can use a humidifier or a pebble tray. Keeping them in the bathroom or kitchen can also increase humidity from steam.
Caladium are not picky about soil type, but they do need a well-draining type. It is best to use a commercial potting soil that holds moisture while still allowing for adequate drainage. A soil-based mix with some perlite, vermiculite, or bark will create a good balance.
Caladiums should be fertilized 4 to 6 times from spring to autumn to ensure a healthy growth, as this is their active growth period. It is best to use a balanced fertilizer high in nitrogen and low in phosphorous and potassium. Liquid, slow-release, and granular fertilizers can all be used. Feeding every other week or according to the package instructions. Water thoroughly before and after fertilizer to prevent burning of the root system.
Common pests infesting Caladiums are aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and whiteflies. Aphids are soft-bodied insects that live and feed on the plant’s stems and underside of the leaves. Keeping your plant clean and away from these pests can help to avoid infestations. If found, you can remove them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Mealybugs are small, white, cottony pests that can easily spread to other plants. You can use horticultural oil or insecticidal soaps to get rid of them. To avoid an infectious, you can regularly check the underside of the leaves. Spider mites are small arachnids that will suck out the plant’s sap. Spraying water on the foliage can help get rid off them. If the mite infestation remains, then you can use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to eradicate them. Whiteflies are small, white, flying insects that will feed on the sap of your Caladium. You can apply insecticidal soap to reduce their population.
Caladiums should be repotted when they are becoming root-bound or need to move to a larger container. When repotting, use a well-draining soil and appropriately sized pot. Do not move the plant down in size as this can stunt its growth.
Velvet Caladium does not require much pruning, but it may benefit from occasional trimming. If it looks old and tired, it can help to remove dead or discolored leaves. Shortening the stems can also help keep it from becoming leggy.
Mulching around Caladiums can help maintain moisture in the soil and create a neat finish. A light layer of organic mulch can be beneficial for the health of the plant, but use sparingly as too much will suffocate the roots over time.
Caladiums can be easily propagated by division. It is best to do this in the spring or early summer, when the plant is actively growing. Carefully remove the root ball from the pot and carefully divide the root clump into several sections, each with a few leaves and some roots. Plant each section in a pot with soil and keep moist until new growth appears. Fertilize occasionally for best results.
Velvet Caladium enjoys having some support when it begins to grow taller. This can help the stems to retain their upright position and help prevent the foliage from becoming leggy from reaching out into the sun. When creating a support for the stems, use thin material such as bamboo stakes or a trellis.
In winter, Caladiums go into a period of dormancy. They will stop actively growing and may shed most of their leaves and become dormant. During this period, they need less water and fertilizer but should not be exposed to harsh conditions, such as freezing temperatures. Water sparingly and keep in a protected spot.
Caladiums are non-toxicity plants, so they are safe for curious pets to chew or nibble on. However, it may cause an upset stomach or digestive issues in some animals, so it is best to keep them away.
