Green Velvet Alocasia
Green Velvet Alocasia (Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek') is a beautiful tropical clumping evergreen plant with thick, velvety leaves that grow in a rosette form. The new leaves emerge a striking deep purple or burgundy color with a strong velvety texture and gradually fade to a deep olive green as they mature. It prefers bright indirect light and needs to be kept out of direct sun as it can fade and burn. It is a moderately fast grower and can reach over two feet tall in warm stretches of its spring and summer growth period. It needs to be kept lightly moist, but not wet, and does best in soil that is well draining and has good aeration.
The Alocasia likes its soil kept lightly moist, but not wet. When the lower two inches of the soil is dry, water your Green Velvet Alocasia until the soil is evenly moistened. Make sure it has adequate drainage and ensure that there is no standing water as that can lead to root rot. The plant also appreciates some humidity so mist the leaves sporadically to avoid powdery mildew.
Green Velvet Alocasia prefers bright indirect light and needs to be kept out of direct sun as it can fade and burn. The plant can be grown outdoors in tropical climates, but grows much better indoors with proper care. Green Velvet Alocasia does well in a location with ample bright light, but not quite full sun. Northern or eastern facing windows are good spots to place the Alocasia for best results. Do not keep in excessively shady areas as the growth rate will slow down.
This plant likes to warm temperatures of around 60-90°F (15-30°C). In the summer, temperatures can go up to 80-90°F or (27-30°C). In the winter, temperatures should not drop below 50°F (10°C). It is important to keep Green Velvet Alocasia away from cold drafts, including air conditioning.
Green Velvet Alocasia appreciates higher levels of humidity and prefers an environment where the relative humidity is between 40 and 80 percent. In such an environment, it thrives, with its foliage lush and velvety. You may need to try to increase the humidity around your Alocasia if you live in a particularly dry climate. This could be achieved using a humidifier or even simply placing a shallow tray of water beneath the pot that can evaporate and keep the air around your plant more humid.
Green Velvet Alocasia requires a light, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter such as composted bark or coco coir. A light speciality potting mix with peat moss will also be fine. Make sure that your soil is not overly heavy or dense as this can lead to root rot or weak growth.
The Alocasia is a light feeder, so ensure to use a balanced liquid fertilizer specifically formulated for houseplants, and dilute to half the recommended strength. Feed the Alocasia once a month during its active growth period in spring and summer, and every two months in winter and fall. Do not fertilize while the plant is dormant, or if the soil is soggy.
Green Velvet Alocasia can be prone to spider mites, scale, mealybugs, and aphids infestations. To prevent infestations, make sure to inspect the plant from time to time and spray it with a steady spray of water to knock off any pests. You should also remove any affected leaves. If there is already an infestation, use a natural insecticidal soap to treat it or neem oil. Spray it onto the plant, making sure to fully cover all leaves and stems. Avoid spraying in direct sunlight as it can burn the leaves.
The Alocasia loves to be rootbound, but will still need to be repotted every year or two. When repotting, make sure to provide a fresh and well-draining potting soil. It is best to use a potting mix specifically formulated for houseplants. Repot in springtime or in the early summer, as the plant is on an active growth period that will make it easier to settle in after the repot.
Prune back any yellowing or dead leaves to help the Alocasia look its best and encourage new growth. To trim back the plant, use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut back the dead foliage. This will help clear the way for new growth and make room for new, vibrant foliage.
You can use organic mulch such as bark chips to help lock the moisture into the soil - this is particularly beneficial in the spring and summer months when the plant is putting out the most new growth. Ensure the mulch is never directly touching the stem of the plant and is kept at least 2 inches from the stem.
Green Velvet Alocasia can be propagated by division in either spring or early summer. Carefully remove the roots from the pot, and gently pull apart. Re-pot the divisions in fresh, well-draining soil and keep moist until they become established. You can also propagate through stem cutting. Look for a healthy stem with several joint sections and sever the entire stem. Make sure the stem section has at least two or three tubers. Plant the cuttings in moist soil and keep in bright but indirect light.
Green Velvet Alocasia is a relatively tall plant and can benefit from some support. To help keep it erect, insert a sturdy stake at the same time as potting it and use twine to tie it to the stake. This will help the stem be strong and straight and hold the foliage up.
During Fall and Winter, the growth of Green Velvet Alocasia slows down and enters a period of rest. Keep watering to a minimum and allow the top soil to dry out before rewatering. The amount of light can be decreased, but not be kept in complete darkness. The temperature should not be allowed to drop below 10°C or 50°F during the dormant period.
Green Velvet Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so be sure to keep it out of reach of any pets. Also, gloves should be worn when handling the sap of the Alocasia as it can cause skin irritation.
