Angel's Wings
The Angel’s Wings plant, or Caladium bicolor, is an easy-to-care-for houseplant with striking foliage and a compact size. It has large heart-shaped leaves with various patterns and color variations. It’s coloring can include reds, purples, greens, and whites, and the pairings of these colors range from light pink to deep red or green. This makes these plants highly sought after for their decorative foliage. Its colorful leaves can reach up to ten inches in length.
Caladium bicolor should be watered when the soil or potting mixture is dry to the touch. Don’t water the plant until it’s been a few days since the last water. Different variables also need to be taken into consideration before overwatering such as soil composition, light exposure, and environmental temperatures. Water should also be monitored closely during winter months, when growth is slow and watering is significantly reduced.
These plants prefer bright indirect light and don’t do well in direct sunlight. Place them in an area with south or west facing windows, or near an east-facing window, and you should have no issue keeping your Angel’s Wings plant happy. If you notice the leaves starting to curl or that the vibrant colors on the leaves start to fade, try moving the plant to an area with brighter indirect light.
The optimal temperature range for the Angel’s Wings is between 60-80°F (15-26°C). Warmer temperatures, combined with increased humidity, stimulate growth. During winter months, dropping the temperature by 10°F (6°C) can help this houseplant avoid damage or scorching from the cold.
Caladium plants prefer high humidity and will thrive in a room with a humidity level of 50 percent or more. If you live in a drier climate you can increase the humidity by using a humidifier or placing a shallow tray of water near the plant. You can also mist the leaves regularly.
The best soil for Caladiums should be lightweight and well-draining. A combination of 70-80 percent peat moss and 20-30 percent perlite is ideal for Angel’s Wings, as it is perfect for retaining moisture without becoming soggy. Miracle Gro Cactus, Palm & Citrus Potting Mix is also suitable for Caladiums.
Caladiums should be fertilized once a month during the summer months. Choose a balanced liquid fertilizer such as 20-20-20, and dilute it to half strength. Never feed a newly purchased plant. Only start fertilizing when new growth appears or after the plant has gone through it’s dormant phase.
Caladium plants are generally free from pests but are susceptible to occasional infestations of aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. These pests are relatively easy to control, and early detection is key. Wipe off pests by hand or use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or instead, use a ready-made insecticidal soap or neem oil spray.
Caladiums should only be repotted every three years or so when they become root bound in their current container. When it becomes time to repot, you may want to divide the plant and pot two or more of the divisions to create a fuller plant. When planting, use a well-draining potting mixture and make sure the container has adequate drainage holes.
Caladiums do not require much pruning unless you need to manage their size or shape. Pruning leggy or tired-looking leaves can help promote healthy and vigorous growth in the plant and keep it looking attractive. However, they should not be pruned severely as this will inhibit new growth and cause stress to the plant.
Mulching is a great way to keep soil temperatures consistent and control weeds. Typically, a two- to four-inch layer of finely pulverized mulch, such as pine bark or wood chips, works well for Caladiums. You can also use sphagnum peat moss or finely chopped leaves to provide extra humidity.
Propagation of Caladium plants can be done using either the Division or Tissue Culture methods. To propagate a Caladium plant through the Division method, wait until the warmer spring and summer months have arrived and the plant has settled in for the growing season. Then you can carefully remove the plant by using a knife or trowel. Making sure to include some underground root systems and as much soil as possible.
Angel's Wings are relatively fragile and require support if their stems become too long or heavy. If the stems are drooping and the soil is overly moist, you may want to consider a stake to help the plant support its own weight. Natural wooden or bamboo stakes are both great for this task.
As the plant grows older it will enter a resting phase as winter approaches, usually around October. During this period, it is important to move the plant to a cooler area and to decrease watering. This helps to prepare the plant for its resting phase, so don’t be alarmed if you see fewer leaves and stems.
Caladium bicolors are not toxic to humans, but they may be toxic to pets. If you have cats, dogs, or other animals, be sure to keep them away from Caladiums as the leaves can cause irritation to their digestive systems. If ingested, the leaves can cause vomiting, excessive drooling, nausea, and loss of appetite.
