Natal Plum Bonsai
The Natal Plum Bonsai (Carissa macrocarpa) is a tropical evergreen shrub with glossy, succulent leaves and fragrant white flowers. In its natural habitat, it grows up to 3 meters in height, but in a bonsai pot, it will remain at a more diminutive size. The foliage is dark green and leathery, and bright red fruits will often appear on mature plants. A native to South Africa, this species has numerous benefits - it is drought tolerant, quick growing, and easy to care for.
Water your Natal Plum bonsai when the top 2-3 inches of soil feels dry to the touch. Water enough so that the potting mix becomes uniform in colour and make sure to check for waterlogging. If possible, make sure to use soft water as it is less likely to cause a build up of salts and other minerals in the soil. It is important to not allow this species to become overly dry so be sure to water regularly.
Natal Plum bonsai need full sun to partial shade, but do not grow as well in full shade. It should be placed in a bright window that gets four to five hours of direct sunlight a day. Lack of sunlight can cause weak growth and yellowing of leaves. If you notice yellow spots or burning of leaves, it is possible that you are giving too much direct sunlight.
Natal Plum bonsai is a tropical species that prefers warm temperatures. During the summer months, the most ideal temperature for the Natal Plum bonsai is between 25-32°C (77-90°F). During the winter months, it is best to keep the temperature cooler but above freezing at around 0-10°C ( 32-50°F). It is important to keep it at a stable temperature as drastic changes in temperatures can be dangerous.
Natal Plum bonsai prefers a high humidity environment and should be misted several times a week or kept near a humidifier. During the winter months, humidity levels should be around 40-50%, and in the summer it should be higher, around 70-80%. If the humidity is too low, the leaves may start to curl.
Natal Plum bonsai prefers a well-draining soil that should at least be 70% organic material. A good potting mix has a good balance of nutrient-rich organic matter, such as peat moss, leafmold, or compost, mixed with a small amount of coarse sand or perlite to help absorb excess moisture. For an extra boost in nutrition, add some slow release fertilizer or composted manure.
Natal Plum bonsai should be fertilized using a balanced, slow release fertilizer during the spring and summer seasons when the plant is actively growing. Apply only half the recommended amount of fertilizer as over-fertilizing can result in burning or yellowing of the leaves. Liquid fertilizers should be applied every two weeks during the growing season, and reduced or skipped during the winter months.
Common pests for Natal Plum bonsai are aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. If you notice any of these pests, you can treat them with an insecticidal soap. Those treatments are effective and environment friendly. You can also use a neem oil mixture. To apply it, spray on both the top and bottom sides of the leaves. To prevent future infestations, be sure to keep the plant clean and free of dead leaves.
Natal Plum bonsai should be repotted every one to two years. When repotting, use a well drained and acidic potting soil suitable for bonsai. When your Natal Plum bonsai is beginning to outgrow its pot, choose a larger container that will give it enough room to grow and develop its root system. Make sure there are hole in the bottom for adequate drainage.
Natal Plum bonsai should be pruned regularly to shape and maintain its miniature size. The best time to prune is late spring or early summer, as the plant will enter a new growth cycle. Use sharp pruning shears or scissors to make your cuts in order to avoid disease and infection. Make sure to sanitize your tools and prune any dead or damaged branches.
Mulching can be beneficial to the Natal Plum bonsai. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil and keeps weeds away. You can use organic mulch such as shredded bark, compost, or peat moss. Make sure the mulch is never more than 2 inches (5 cm) deep to prevent rotting of the roots.
Propagation of Natal Plum bonsai can be done through stem cuttings or air layering. To propagate from stem cuttings, take cuttings from semi-ripe shoots 8–10 cm long in late summer or fall. Dip the cuttings into a rooting hormone and firmly plant into a well-draining soil. To air layer, select new growth in the spring and wrap moist sphagnum moss around the branch, tying it securely with twine or plastic string.
Natal Plum bonsai can be trained into a variety of shapes, including formal upright, informal upright, slanting, cascade, and multi-trunk. To make sure these shapes hold, use thin copper wire on the main branches and trunk to keep them in the desired shape and position.
Although Natal Plum bonsai is evergreen, it does need a normal rest period during the winter to maintain its health. During the rest period, the amount of sunlight and watering should be reduced significantly. Keep fertilization to a minimum and reduce the pruning drastically.
Natal Plum bonsai is toxic to both cats and dogs. The plant contains Carissin, an alkaloid toxin which may cause abdominal pain, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested. The best way to ensure the safety of your pets is to keep this plant out of reach.
