Flamingo Flower
The Flamingo Flower, also known as the Painter's Palette, or Anthurium scherzerianum, is a tropical flowering perennial plant of the Araceae family. It is native to the American tropics, where it can be found in wet, warm environments. It is a semi-evergreen, sub-woody, clumping plant, growing up to 30 inches in height and 20 inches in width. Flamingo Flower has glossy, dark green foliage, and its showy, waxy, heart-shaped leaves can be up to 20 inches long and 10 inches wide. Boasting numerous cone shaped, flower spikes that can be up to 8 inches long, they are densely covered with small, pinkish-red, heart shaped flowers, hence the common name ‘Flamingo Flower’ as the mass of floral clusters resemble a flamboyant feather.
Flamingo Flower likes damp soil that never gets completely dried out or overly saturated. Make sure to water it deeply when the top of the soil in the pot starts to look and feel dry. Empty out any leftover water in the drip tray after every watering session, as too much water will quickly lead to root rot and other issues. As a tropical plant, it likes slightly more acidic soil. To increase acidity, add peat to the mix.
Flamingo Flower appreciates plenty of bright but indirect light in order for its stunning foliage to reach its full potential. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as too much can cause the foliage to burn as well as slow down flowering production. While good air circulation is important, the leaves of this plant are susceptible to strong air currents, so should be kept away from both open windows and active air-conditioning units.
Flamingo Flower will thrive between 15C-35C (60F-95F). Keep temperatures consistent and above 10C (50F) at all times in order to avoid any temperature-related issues; sudden changes in temperatures can cause Leaves to yellow and wilt.
As a tropical plant, Flamingo Flower will appreciate increased levels of humidity. IDEAL levels should be between 60-80%, however occasional misting will help keep moisture and humidity levels consistent. If you find your plant is drying out at a faster rate than usual, try adding a pebble tray underneath the pot to increase humidity levels.
Flamingo Flower should be planted in light potting mixes. This should have a good mix of organic matter and soil which allow good drainage and aeration. If using peat-based soils, make sure to watch the pH levels as too much acidity can be detrimental to the plant. Generally, aim for a pH range of 6.5-7.
Flamingo Flower prefers a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Fertilize plant in late spring/early summer every 2 weeks using a liquid fertilizer, preferably an organic fertilizer, and do not fertilize the plant during its resting period. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions indicated on the fertilizer packaging to avoid over-fertilization, which could result in foliage burn.
The most common pests to affect Flamingo flower are Mealy Bugs, Spider Mites and Aphids. Mealy Bugs appear as small, white cotton-like blotches on the foliage. Spider Mites can be identified by light speckling on the leaves and a webbing beneath the foliage. Aphids are identifiable by their small green or yellow bodies, these can cluster at the flower base. All these pests can be easily treated with an insecticides spray and regular checks, or can be prevented with regular wiping down of the leaves and occasional neem oil applications on the products.
Repotting is only necessary when the roots of the plant become very dense and start to juts out of the drainage hole. Failing to do this can lead to a decrease in flowering or other issues with growth. Aim to repot every two to three years, making sure to avoid wetting the foliage during the procedure. Replace the old soil with fresh soil.
Flamingo Flower does not need regular pruning. Just remove any yellowed, withered or dead leaves as soon as this is observed. Doing this ensures any risk of pests or diseases is kept to a minimum.
Mulching should be thoroughly applied in late spring and should consist of a mix of coarse sand, leaf mulch and light soil. Avoid using anything too thick as this can affect the roots of the plant. The roots should be left alone and not disturbed.
Flamingo Flower can be propagated both through rhizome division or stem cutting. Division is often the best way to propagate this plant, as it requires a large container and plenty of space to grow. When propagating through division, carefully tease the rhizomes apart and replant in separate containers. To propagate via stem cuttings, make sure to cut a 10-15cm stem just under a leaf node and then carefully plant into water or moist soil. Mist the cutting regularly, and ensure the container and surrounding environment remain humid.
As Flamingo Flower has a loose, spreading habit, you may need to provide some form of support, such as a stake or bamboo, especially when new foliage is developing in order to prevent the stems from bending and falling over.
Flamingo Flower does not require a rest period, but this is also essential when managing this flowering species. Once the re-flowering stem has expired, make sure to cut back the foliage, and stop watering and fertilizing for a few weeks. This will help the plant to re-energize and prepare and initiate flowering anew.
Flamingo Flower is non-toxic to pets.
