Arrow Arum
Arrow Arum (Peltandra virginica), sometimes known as Arrowhead, Bog arrowhead, or Virginia arrowhead, is a species of flowering plant of the Araceae family. It is native to wetlands on the east coast of the United States, especially in the South, growing in swamps, marshes, and wet meadows. The round leaves have distinctive arrowhead-shaped tips. Blue-green in color, they can grow up to 2 feet in length. White or greenish-white flowers appear from May to July. The fruit is most often found from August to October in the form of a berry that changes from yellow to orange or red when it ripens.
Arrow Arum should be watered regularly throughout the growing season with around 1 inch of water per week. After the plant is established, it does not need so much water, and too much water could lead to root rot. In particularly hot and dry spells, the plant may need more water.
Arrow Arum should be grown in full sun, partial shade, or deep shade, but will do best in partial shade or deep shade. Leaves may become yellow or scorched if too much direct sun is allowed. Leaf color will be darker in colder areas or with less direct sunlight.
Arrow Arum grows best in temperatures of 18°-21° Celsius (65°-70°Fahrenheit), but can survive as low as 3°C (37°F). Colder temperatures can lead to wilting and yellowing of the leaves.
Arrow Arum grows best in humid environments, so misting or providing a sheltered environment with high humidity is important. This could be done with a humidifier or by bringing the pot close to a water source, such as a pond or fountain.
Arrow Arum needs rich, well-drained soil with lots of organic matter. It can grow in both sandy and clay soils, but a soil mix of one part sand and two parts loam is ideal. The pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5.
Fertilization is important for healthy growth and the plant should be fertilized once a month during the growing season using a balanced-formula fertilizer. Be sure not to use too much fertilizer as this can harm the plant. Organic fertilizer can also be used, such as fish emulsion or aged compost.
Arrow Arum can be prone to pests such as aphids and mealybugs. Aphids can be removed with a cotton swab dipped in a mild soap and water solution. Mealybugs can be treated with insecticidal soap or an appropriate insecticide. Fungal diseases such as leaf spot can also occur and should be treated with a fungicide.
Arrow Arum does not need to be repotted often, as it prefers a cramped space. It can be repotted every two to three years in rich soil with good drainage. When repotting, use a pot one size larger than the previous one and gently reposition the plant in the center of the pot.
Arrow Arum is a low maintenance plant and does not need much pruning. If necessary, prune lightly to remove dead or damaged leaves and stems, or to shape the plant. This pruning can be done any time of year.
Mulching can help keep soil moist and prevent weeds from competing with the plant. Use organic material such as bark, straw, or wood chips to mulch the soil in the pot, making sure the mulch is spread evenly and not piled up too thick.
Arrow Arum can be propagated from seed, which should be planted in spring in a shady location and kept moist. It can also be propagated by division, where periodical division of the rhizome will result in additional plants. Offsets can also be grown from the existing plant by cutting the stem and planting it in a moist, shady location.
Arrow Arum does not need staking or other support and can stand on its own. However, if additional support is needed, it can be placed inside a tall container and stakes can be used to secure it in place.
Arrow Arum should have a winter rest period, where it should receive less light, water, and fertilizer than during summer months. During the rest period, the plant should be kept cooler with temperatures ranging between 8°-10°C (46°-50°F).
Arrow Arum is not toxic to pets, making it a safe plant for households with animals.
