Syngonium
Syngonium podophyllum, also known as arrowhead plants, goosefoot plants, nephthytis, five fingers, or African evergreens, is a long-lived, easy to care for houseplant. Its epiphytic roots grow in the humid air of semi-tropical jungles, but it can also be grown in homes. The leaves are highly variable in shapes, ranging from 3-lobed, arrow-head shaped shapes to deeply-divided ones. The plants thrive in bright indirect light, but foliage color can get paler with too much direct sunlight. The leaves may also yellow if underwatered, and droop if overwatered. It is important to provide proper watering schedule to maintain healthy growth.
This plant needs to be watered consistently and deeply. Let the top of the soil on the pot become almost dry before watering. Make sure it is not standing in water or overly moist soil for significant periods of time. In winter, it receives significantly less water than other seasons, since its growth rate naturally slows down. Over-watering can lead to root rot of the plant.
Syngonium podophyllum grow best in bright, indirect sunlight. It tolerates some periods of direct sunlight but the leaves may burn if exposed to direct sun for too long. It may benefit from fluorescent lighting parts of the day, but too much direct sunlight may strip the leaves of its color and growth will be stunted over time.
In general, it prefers moderate temperatures between 65 to 75°F (18-24°C) during the day and around 60°F (15°C) at night. Keep it away from draughts and direct heat sources.
High humidity is important for these plants to thrive. If the air is dry, regular misting is needed, or the area where is sits can be gradually humidified with a hand-held mister.
For the Syngonium podophyllum, use a high-quality potting mix that is light and fast-draining. A mixture of 1 part regular potting soil and 1 part peat moss or coconut coir is suitable for this plant.
During spring and summer, fertilize monthly. Use a balanced fertilizers or slow-release fertilizers to avoid burning the plant. The fertilizer should be diluted to half or 1/4 of the recommended dose. During fall and winter, suspend fertilizing as it enters a dormant period.
Aphids, mealy bugs, scale insects, white-fly, and spider mites are the most common pests that attack the Syngonium plant. To get rid of those pests, use horticultural oils overtime, neem oil, pyrethrum-based, or insecticidal soap solutions every 10-14 days. Make sure to read and follow the instructions on the label. Make sure to inspect the entire plant for signs of pests and treat it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
Since this plant is slow-growing, it does not require repotting every year. Repot the plant when the roots are tightly packed in the container, and exchange fresh potting soil with the old. Regular repotting will help to keep the good health of the plant.
This plant should be pruned sparingly. Low hanging leaves or dead stems should be removed as needed. On occasion, whole stems may need to be pruned back to the base of the plant in order to maintain the shape of the plant or to promote fresh growth.
Unlike many plants, this one does not typically require mulching. However, if desired, use a layer of sphagnum moss around the base of the plant.
The Syngonium Podophyllum can be propagated easily by stem cuttings. Select healthy stems that have several leaves on the top. Cut a couple of inches and remove the leaves from the bottom part of the stem. Place the cutting in water until roots appear, and pot it up in potting soil and perlite. Keep the temperature steady and soil moist and well-drained.
The viney stems naturally want to ramble and grow around trellises and other support systems. Use any support structure suitable for the space where it is kept.
This plant does not require any kind of winter rest period, since they are native to warmer climates. However, the light should be dimmed and watering should be decreased in order for the plant to energy and growth.
The Sygonium podophyllum is toxic to pets, so make sure to keep them away away from the plants.
