Schefflera
Schefflera arboricola, also known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a tropical evergreen shrub native to Taiwan and Southern China. It is an easy to care for houseplant that can reach heights between 3 and 10 feet in its native habitat. This bushy plant can yield foliage of dark green, oval-shaped leaflets which arboricola in Latin means tree-like. It produces attractive yellow flowers during the summer, followed by small red fruits.
As the Dwarf Umbrella tree is used to growing in hot and humid climates, it is important to keep it moist, though not soggy. Keep the soil evenly moist by watering it thoroughly when the top 1 inch of soil is dry. Avoid having water sit on the foliage or roots. In addition, during the summer, you can increase its humidity by misting it every few days.
Schefflera arboricola prefers bright, indirect light, such as near a window with sheer curtains or several feet away from an east- or west-facing window. Additionally, it can tolerate some direct sunlight during morning hours, although it should be avoided in the afternoon. This fragrant plant will benefit from occasional spritzing with water and spraying with a nebulized mist for extra humidity.
This tropical houseplant prefers temperature ranging between 65 and 75°F (18-24°C). It will not do as well in extreme hot or cold temperatures. If temperatures go below 55°F (13°C), Schefflera arboricola should not be exposed to drafts or temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
Schefflera arboricola prefers humid environments, as it is native to tropical and subtropical climates. To maintain the right level of humidity, mist the Dwarf Umbrella Tree foliage every few days in the morning. Additionally, place the pot on a bed of moist pebbles and mist the pebbles to increase its humidity.
Schefflera arboricola prefers a well-draining potting soil with a pH between 6.1 and 7.5. You can use a potting soil blend that contains perlite, peat moss, bark chips or sphagnum moss for best results. Additionally, adding well-rotted organic compost to the soil mixture will provide ample nutrition to the plant.
Fertilizing your Schefflera arboricola should be done during the summer months, from May to September, at least once every month. A balanced, water soluble fertilizer such as 10-10-10 should be used diluted at 1/4 strength. Additionally, you can add a slow-release fertilizer during the repotting process to provide extra nutrition to the plant.
Schefflera arboricola can be occasionally affected by common houseplant-pests such as mealybugs, aphids, spider mites, and scale. In order to get rid of these, start by hand-picking the pests from the stems and leaves. Additionally, you can use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to remove the pests. For larger infestations, use an insecticidal soaps or oil solution.
Schefflera arboricola should be repotted every two to three years. Use a good quality potting soil and a pot with at least one drainage hole so the excess water can escape. When you are repotting, consider simply replacing the top soil with fresh soil instead of uprooting the entire plant.
Pruning your Schefflera arboricola is beneficial for its overall health and growth. To maintain its classic tree-shape, it is important to trim off fronds and stems every few weeks, removing any yellow or dry leaves. Pruning this houseplant is also helpful for controlling the size of the plant. This also promotes better air circulation and prevents the spread of fungal diseases.
Mulching can help keep your Schefflera arboricola soil moist and provide extra nutrition. Consider using natural mulches such as wood bark chips or compost. The mulch should not be too thick or be placed directly against the stem of the plant or it could cause rotting.
The easiest way to propagate Schefflera arboricola is by cuttings. Take several 4-inch stem cuttings and place them in water. If preferred, you can also propagate this species from seeds or air layering. Place the pot in an area with bright, indirect sunlight and water it often.
Schefflera arboricola can become top-heavy and require support if it keeps growing. For the best results, provide the plant with a tall, sturdy stake or trellis if needed. Make sure to secure the stake properly with an outdoor appropriate rope or cloth and tie it loosely around the plant's trunk for additional support.
No rest period is necessary for Schefflera arboricola, as they grow throughout the year. However, you can reduce the watering and light of the plant during its winter period. Aim to keep the soil only lightly moist and water the plant less frequently in order to avoid overwatering.
Schefflera arboricola is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Symptoms of ingesting this plant include burning and itching sensations, difficulty in breathing and swelling of the mouth, throat, tongue, and skin. Additionally, the leaves of this plant are notable for containing saponins which are known to be toxic to cats.
