Elachi Banana
The Elachi Banana is an ornamental plant in the Musacea family that is native to Southeast Asia and makes an excellent choice for houseplants. Elachi Bananas are recognizable by their bright yellow and green foliage and their white flowers with purple bracts that bloom in summertime. The plant's grows up to 3 feet tall and wide at a medium rate and enjoys bright, indirect light and prefers soil that is moist but well-draining. This plant is an easy to care for addition to any home.
The Elachi Banana needs consistent watering to ensure that they are adequately hydrated and never allowed to dry out completely. When watering, soak the soil and then allow the top layer to dry out before adding more water. In hotter months they may require more frequent waterings.
The Elachi Banana needs at least 6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight a day. It does best in south- or west-facing windows but keep it away from direct sunlight which can scorch the foliage. If the light is too low, they will become leggy and grow more slowly.
The Elachi Banana prefers temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C). If the temperature is too low, the plant will go dormant and may take some time to revive. If the temperature is too high, the leaves may begin to curl. Avoid placing the plant in drafty areas.
The Elachi Banana prefers high humidity and will benefit from misting, using a humidifier or placing the pot on a humidity tray with pebbles. The plant may become dry and the leaves may start to curl if the air around them is too dry.
The Elachi Banana enjoys soil that is moist but well-draining. The soil should have organic matter to retain moisture but also provide some drainage. A good blend for this plant is 1 part potting soil, 1 part peat moss and 1 part leaf litter or perlite.
Since the Elachi Banana needs plenty of nutrients, it is best to fertilize it in the springtime. Choose a high-quality fertilizer with balanced nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Avoid over-fertilizing as this can damage the roots of the plant. Do not fertilize during the autumn and winter rest period.
The Elachi Banana may be prone to various types of pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, whiteflies and scales. If this happens, immediately remove the pests with a cotton swab dabbed in rubbing alcohol. Be sure to thoroughly inspect the plant each time you water for any additional signs of pests. In severe cases, insecticidal soap can help to eliminate the pests.
The Elachi Banana will benefit from being repotted in the springtime every year or two. It is best to avoid repotting during the summer when the plant may be stressed from the higher temperatures. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one with drainage holes in the bottom.
The Elachi Banana can benefit from pruning to maintain its shape and size. Prune the plant to control its size so it can fit with the surroundings and to ensure no foliage is blocking sunlight. Prune the plant back in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or diseased foliage before new growth appears.
Mulching the Elachi Banana with wood chips, straw, bark or other organic material can help retain moisture and protect the roots from extreme temperatures. Be sure to never use herbicides or pesticides on the mulch, as this can damage the plant.
The Elachi Banana can be propagated through two methods: division or stem cuttings. During the springtime, the plant's rhizomes can be divided and replanted. If propagating through stem cuttings, take a stem that is about 4-6 inches in length and remove the leaves at the bottom. This stem can then be placed in moist soil and kept in a warm area.
As the Elachi Banana grows, it may require a stake or trellis to provide it support as it doesn't like to be constantly touched. Stakes or trellises can be used together with burlap or twine to help keep the foliage out of reach of curious children and pets.
The Elachi Banana will benefit from a rest period in autumn and winter and may slow its growth rate. During this time, do not water the plant as often and keep it away from bright light. This rest period is beneficial because it gives the plant a chance to regrow in the spring.
The Elachi Banana is neither toxic or poisonous to pets, such as cats and dogs. Humans can eat the edible fruit as well, which has a sweet flavor.
