Golden Lotus Banana
The Golden Lotus Banana (Musella lasiocarpa) is a compact evergreen perennial in the genus Musella and the Musaceae family. It has broad, banana-like leaves and blooms bright yellow flowers from the top of its thick stem. Its fragrant and bright flowers make it a great choice as a houseplant. Grown as a single stem or in a clump, this houseplant reaches heights of 2ft or more.
When it comes to watering, the Golden Lotus Banana should be watered once or twice a week, depending on the season. It is important to keep the soil evenly moist without getting soggy. Make sure to adjust your watering schedule accordingly if the plant is in a shadier spot in your house.
The Golden Lotus Banana prefers bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some direct sun, but be sure not to position it too close to the windowpane to prevent leaf burn. Doing so will result in your plant becoming distressed.
Ideal temperature for a Golden Lotus Banana should range between 65-85 °F (18-29°C). Avoid temperatures that drop below 50°F (10°C). During winter, make sure the temperatures don't drop below 55°F (13°C). During the warm summer months, enjoy the natural cooling breeze coming from a fan or air conditioning.
Humidity for a Golden Lotus Banana is ideally between 40-60% percent and should not exceed 60%. In order to increase the indoor humidity level, use a humidifier or place the pot in a tray of water and pebbles. Misting the leaves of the plant daily will also help, but keeping the soil too moist could lead to root rot.
Use a well-draining soil mix with added perlite for aeration. A combination of peat moss, permeable soil, perlite, and compost is ideal for this houseplant. If you choose to use regular potting soil, add perlite to increase the drainage.
Fertilize your Golden Lotus Banana with a regular houseplant fertilizer. Fertilize this houseplant once every two weeks in the summer months when the plant is growing, and in late winter/early spring. Avoid fertilizing in the cooler months, when the plant is dormant. Use a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium for optimal growth.
The Golden Lotus Banana is a very desirable plant because it is known to be pest resistant, however it is still susceptible to common houseplant pests like aphids, mealybugs and spider mites. If your plant does have an infestation, use organic insecticidal soap or neem oil. Make sure to apply the solutions on the infected areas only so that you don’t spread the infestation to other parts of your plant. It is important to note that you should apply neem oil in small amounts and only when the plant is not receiving direct sunlight.
Golden Lotus Banana is a slow-growing plant and will not need to be re-potted often. Repot your plant every 2-3 years into a large pot or container that has proper drainage. Be careful not to over-pot your plant as this can waterlog and cause root rot.
This houseplant does not require regular pruning, however, in order to retain its shape or neaten it up you can prune it. Cut off any old or dead leaves and stalks at the bottom. Also, remove dead flowers regularly, as this will stimulate more growth.
Mulching is not necessary for Golden Lotus Banana, but a thin layer of mulch can be used to keep the soil temperature more even and retain moisture in the summer months. Use organic mulch such as bark chips, recycled wood, or compost.
Propagating the Golden Lotus Banana is fairly simple. The best time to do so is early in the spring before the plant starts to bloom. Take stem cuttings and remove all the leaves from the lower portion of the stem. Place the cuttings in a pot filled with a moist soil mix and perlite. Make sure that the leaves are above the soil. Water it well and cover the pot with a plastic bag or plastic wrap to keep the warmth and humidity level high. The cutting should take root within a few weeks.
Golden Lotus Banana is a sturdy plant, so it does not need any additional support such as stakes or trellis. If the stems start to collapse under the weight of its large fronds, you can provide some kind of support like short bamboo canes or stakes.
Golden Lotus Banana does not require a rest period, but it will benefit from a cooler and drier environment occasionally. In autumn, reduce the watering and let the soil to dry out between waterings. Additionally, do not fertilize the plant until late winter.
The Golden Lotus Banana is not toxic to pets if ingested, however, it may irritate the digestive tract if eaten in large amounts and may lead to vomiting or diarrhea.
