Dendrobium Phalaenopsis
Dendrobium phalaenopsis, also known as the moth orchid, is a very popular houseplant with beautiful, long lasting flowers. It has attractive green foliage with many pointed leaves that grow in a clump. It is an easy to care for and maintain houseplant, and is one of the most popular species of orchid for beginner gardeners. It can be found in a wide variety of colors, ranging from vibrant pink to creamy white. It is an epiphytic orchid, meaning it grows on other plants or trees for support, but does not necessarily rely on those plants or trees for nutrients.
When it comes to watering your Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, you should water it sparingly and only when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. You should also keep in mind that it does not like sitting in water for too long, as this can cause root rot. Too much water can also cause the leaves and blossoms to rot. When you water it, do so thoroughly, until the water runs out of the drainage tray. Make sure the potting mix is evenly moist, but not soggy.
Dendrobium phalaenopsis prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid any direct sun, as it can scorch the leaves and cause the flowers to fade. If it is getting too much light, the foliage will start to yellow. If the plant is not receiving enough light, the plant will become leggy and the petals of the blooms will not be as vibrant. A south or east facing window is best, but be sure to give the plant some protection from the bright sunlight.
Dendrobium phalaenopsis prefer temperatures ranging from 65°F (18°C) to whenever the temperature dips below freezing (32°F / 0°C). They will tolerate some higher temperatures - up to 90°F (32°C). The ideal temperature is between 70-77°F (21-25°C). It is important to keep in mind that temperatures that are too hot for this species may cause the orchid to go into dormancy, which will result in the orchid not flowering.
Optimum humidity levels for Dendrobium Phalaenopsis is between 50-70%. The plant requires high humidity levels in order to thrive and produce healthy flowers. You can increase the humidity level around your orchid by misting it with water every day or two, or using a room humidifier. Too low of humidity can cause the tips of the leaves to turn brown and shrivel up.
Dendrobium Phalaenopsis requires an orchid bark-based potting mix, which provides excellent drainage to keep the roots dry and healthy. The mix should also include sphagnum moss and perlite as well in order to ensure it has good aeration. The orchid should be placed in a pot with several drainage holes in the bottom to avoid root rot.
It is important to fertilize your Dendrobium Phalaenopsis regularly to ensure it stays healthy and blooms regularly. Fertilizing once a month is recommended with an orchid-specific fertilizer. Water the plant before fertilizing to avoid root burn. Allow the fertilizer to thoroughly dry before watering again, or use a fertilizer that is made for use with water.
Dendrobium Phalaenopsis is prone to several common pests, such as spider mites, mealybugs, thrips, and scale. If an infestation is noticed, it is important to take immediate action to avoid damaging to the entire plant. This may include washing the plant down with a gentle soap and warm water solution, pruning off any affected areas, and using a pest control product to target the pests. Neem oil is an effective natural option for treating pests.
Dendrobium Phalaenopsis should be repotted every 12-18 months, or whenever the orchid has outgrown its pot. To repot, begin by gently removing the plant from its existing pot. Prepare a new pot with a well-draining potting mix, such as orchid bark mix, and place the orchid in it. Water the orchid and adjust any loose leaves. Once the new potting mix has settled, add a support mechanism such as a stake or bamboo to encourage the orchid to grow upward.
With Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, any pruning should generally be done after blooming is finished. Prune off any dead or dying stems and blooms, and also remove any yellow, spotted, or drooping leaves. Be sure to sanitize any pruners you are using before and after pruning to prevent any further problems from spreading.
Mulching around the base of the orchid will help conserve moisture in the soil and retain heat and humidity. For Dendrobium Phalaenopsis, try using a coarse bark mulch, such as pine bark, shredded bark, or fir bark.
Dendrobium Phalaenopsis can easily be propagated by division. Begin by carefully removing the orchid from its pot. Separate the offsets, or young plants, from the mother plant. Plant the offsets in their own individual pots, using an orchid bark-based potting mix. Water the offsets regularly and care for them as you would care for a new orchid.
This species of orchid may need support in order to help keep the plant upright, especially when it is in flowering season. Support may be provided by tying the orchid to a stake or bamboo structure. This will help prevent the stems from bending and breaking due to the weight of the blooms.
Your Dendrobium Phalaenopsis should be placed in a resting period after blooming. During this time, the orchid will require less watering. The frequency of waterings should be cut back to once every two weeks or less. The temperature should also be lowered to 65°F (18°C) at night to help it rest. Once the orchid appears to be actively growing again, normal watering and care can be resumed.
Dendrobium Phalaenopsis are not toxic to pets. However, they can be hazardous to pets if ingested, as they contain saponins, which can upset the gastrointestinal system, or cause an allergic skin reaction.
