Variegated Spider Plant
The Variegated Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum') is a popular, easy to grow houseplant commonly grown indoors. It is a semi-evergreen, spreading perennial, with lance-shaped leaves. The foliage has broad, creamy white edges contrasting with dark green. The long, strappy leaves are held close to a tufted center and it forms an arching mound of foliage. The Variegated Spider Plant often grows up to 20 cm (8 inches) tall, and small plantlets typically appear at the end of the arching foliage. The plantlets can be removed and replanted to make new plants. This plant does best in bright, indirect light, although it will grow in low light.
Water the Spider Plant when the top 1 - 2 inches of soil are dry. Water the plant thoroughly until water comes out of the drainage hole in the pot. Do not let the plant sit in water or it could cause root rot and leaf drop. During the winter, water less often, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
The Variegated Spider Plant does best in bright, indirect sunlight. If grown indoors, it should be placed in an area with bright, indirect light, or near an east-facing window. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, however, too much direct sun can burn the foliage leaves. When grown in low light, its foliage may not be as bright and its growth may be more slow.
The Variegated Spider Plant prefers a warm spot, with temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). It cannot tolerate cold temperatures and should be kept away from cold drafts or temperatures below 55°F (13°C). The ideal humidity levels vary with temperature changes, but it prefers a more humid environment with at least 50% humidity.
The Variegated Spider Plant thrives in higher humidity. However, it is not picky, and can tolerate lower humidity levels. To increase the humidity levels, mist the leaves once or twice a week, or place the pot on top of a wet pebble tray. Keep in mind that higher humidity can lead to yellowing of lower foliage if plant is not watered properly.
The Variegated Spider Plant prefers a light and well-draining soil. A good soil mix for this houseplant includes one part perlite to two parts peat moss. In addition, the soil should also contain some slow-release fertilizer like bone meal to provide the necessary nutrients for the plant to thrive. The soil should be slightly acidic with a pH of 5.5-6.0.
The Variegated Spider Plant should be fed once every two weeks in the spring and summertime with a balanced liquid fertilizer. During the cooler months, the fertilizing should be done once a month. It is also important to flush the soil occasionally to remove salts from the fertilizer. Organic options such as fish emulsion or compost tea can also be used, as they are closer to what the plant would receive in a natural environment.
Spider Plants are relatively pest-free, however, scale, mealybugs, and aphids can be seen on the foliage from time to time. The best way to get rid of these pests is to spray the plant with a homemade insecticidal soap or neem oil solution. This method should be done two to three times a week until all the pests are gone. Alternatively, you can use commercial insecticides, but be sure to follow the instructions on the label. Other organic options include rubbing alcohol and horticultural oil.
Repot the Spider Plant once every two to three years, because they grow quickly and require more space and nutrients from the soil. The best time of year to repot is spring, because this is when growth is most active. When repotting, always choose a container that is one size larger than the previous pot, and use a well-draining potting mix. Make sure to add enough soil to the pot to ensure proper drainage.
The Variegated Spider Plant does not need much pruning, but it is necessary to pinch off the dead and damaged leaves occasionally. Also, if the plant is getting too large, you can trim the leaves near the center of the plant, and the whole plant should reduce in size. However, remember to keep a few leaves near the center of the plant, as this is essential for the plant to survive.
Mulching the Variegated Spider Plant is not necessary, but it can improve soil fertility and help retain moisture. When mulching use coarse materials such as bark, pine needles, or wood chips as these mulches allow better air circulation and help the soil retain its moisture content.
Propagation of the Variegated Spider Plant is relatively easy and can be done by dividing the plantlets that sprout from its foliage. First, carefully remove the plantlets with soil around their roots and place them into a new container with moist soil. Keep the roots moist until the roots establish. Once established, water regularly and watch the plantlets grow into new Variegated Spider Plants.
The Variegated Spider Plant does not require any support, as its strong arching foliage stays upright without any help. However, if it grows too tall, you can secure it to a larger plant or stake by using bamboo stakes or soft strings.
The Variegated Spider Plant is a semi-evergreen, meaning it will remain evergreen all year round, however, it will go through a resting period during the wintertime. In winter, the plant will require less water and fertilizer. However, it is important to not let it dry out completely, as this will cause the leaves to turn yellow or drop off.
The Variegated Spider Plant is not toxic to pets, making it a great option for homes with cats or dogs.
