Red Anthurium
Anthurium andraeanum, also known as Red Anthurium or Painter's Palette, is a tropical species of flowering plant native to Colombia. It gets its nickname from its uniquely shaped reddish-pink spathe and yellow spadix, which combine to form the shape of a heart. This unique and beautiful flowering plant is one of the most popular and widely recognizable houseplants for both beginners and experienced gardeners alike.
Water your Red Anthurium when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch, expect when it is in its dormant period. Provide enough water so the soil is completely saturated and there is some excess water draining out the bottom of the pot. Allow the extra water to drain away and empty the drip tray of any excess. It is important to not let the root ball dry out completely as this can cause wilting. It is also important to avoid waterlogged soil as this can lead to root rot.
Red Anthurium prefers bright indirect sunlight to thrive, although they can handle indirect light and some direct sunlight. Avoid placing your Anthurium in direct sun, as this can cause sunburns to develop on its leaves. Ideal temperatures for Red Anthurium are between 65-85 °F (18-29°C). Anything lower or higher can slow down its growth, cause leaves to develop brown spots or cause some of the leaves to fall off.
Red Anthurium prefers temperatures between 65 to 85°F (18-29°C). If the temperature falls below 60°F (15°C), leaves may start to shrivel and drop off. If the temperature rises above 95°F (35°C), the Anthurium's leaves may start to show signs of stress. It is best practice to keep these plants away from sources of intense heat, such as radiators, vents, and other hot spots.
Red Anthurium plants prefer humidity levels of 50-70%. If you live in an area with dry air, try to increase humidity levels by misting the leaves with room temperature water every day. You can also group several plants together in order to increase the amount of humidity they are exposed to. Placing a humidifier in the same room may also help increase air humidity levels for your Red Anthurium.
Red Anthurium prefers well-draining, nutrient-rich, humid soil. A combination of 2 parts peat moss, 1 part vermiculite, and 1 part perlite, is ideal. You can also mix in some organic fertilizer to provide additional nutrients. Be sure to avoid using regular garden soil, as it can be too dense and retain too much moisture, leading to root rot.
Red Anthuriums require a regular fertilization schedule during the spring and summer months. You can use a water soluble fertilizer diluted to half or quarter strength and spray the leaves every 1-2 weeks. During the fall and winter months, when the plant is in its rest period, hold off on fertilizing. You may also wish to add a slow-release fertilizer to the potting mix when repotting your Anthurium.
Mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites are some of the most common pests associated with Red Anthurium. To treat these pests, spray or dab a cotton swab with a diluted solution of rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap. Be sure to cover the entire plant, from top to bottom, to ensure a successful treatment. Hand-picking any affected leaves or stems may also help keep pests at bay. It is also important to keep your plant clear of any debris and tidy to avoid pests from gathering or nesting.
Your Red Anthurium should be repotted every 2-3 years in the spring, when growth is active. You can repot in a slightly larger pot, using a well-draining potting mix. Be sure to always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot. You should discard any excess water, as it can eventually lead to root rot as well.
You can prune your Red Anthurium plant to keep it looking its best and to encourage a bushier growth. Dead or damaged leaves, stems, and flowers should be removed to prevent rotting or the spread of diseases. This also will help to give the plant a fuller shape. Pruning should be done with clean, sharp scissors or secateurs in order to avoid damaging the plant.
Mulching your Red Anthurium plants can help retain moisture in the soil, which helps to protect the plants root system. Organic material such as wood chips, bark or hay are the best options for mulching. You want the mulch to be around 2-inches thick, and you should make sure the mulch does not come into contact with the stem of the plant.
Propagating your Red Anthurium is relatively easy. The best way to propagate these plants is through stem cuttings. Cut a stem of between 2-3 inches with at least 2 node points at the base and carefully remove all the leaves from the base. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and then place them in the substrate of your choice. Cover the planted cuttings with a plastic bag to increase humidity and keep the soil moist until insertion takes place.
Red Anthurium does not need any extra support. Its stems and leaves should be strong enough to support its leafy clusters without any extra help from a stake or trellis.
Red Anthuriums require a rest period in the winter. During this time you should reduce the frequency of watering and stop fertilizing. This will help the plant to go dormant and will help to promote strong growth and healthier plants.
Anthurium andraeanum is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Symptoms of toxicity are drooling and vomiting. If you have pets, it is best to keep your Anthuriums out of reach of curious paws.
