Oyster Plant
Oyster Plant (Tradescantia spathacea) is a tropical perennial featuring long, unique foliage with a spoon-shaped leaf that can often have variegated colors of white, pink and green. Oyster Plant grows in a ground cover-like mat, reaching heights of 6-12 in and a width of 24-36 in. It can tolerate light shade or full shade and needs periods of shade throughout its lifespan. It produces small white flowers in the spring season.
Oyster Plant would prefer an overly-dry environment to being watered too much. When you water it, it's important to make sure you are watering it until the soil is saturated and can no longer absorb any more water. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before you water it again. You can also mist it occasionally to keep the foliage looking glossy. Be careful not to leave standing water in the soil or pot, as this will lead to root rot.
Oyster Plant prefers low-light conditions. It requires several hours of indirect sunlight each day to maintain its color and shape. It should be placed at a spot in your home that offers a few hours of bright, indirect sunlight in the morning, and some shade during the hottest part of the day. Overly bright sunlight can result in your Oyster Plant becoming pale or having its leaves scorch. If your Oyster Plant begins to look limp and discolored, try moving it to a shadier spot.
Oyster Plant is a tropical plant and prefers temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). It can handle cooler temperatures, down to 55°F (13°C) as long as they are not sustained. In colder areas it is best to keep it indoors. High temperatures from 80-90°F (27-32°C) should be avoided as the plant won’t be able to survive.
Oyster Plant would prefer humid conditions however it can tolerate dry air. It prefers slightly higher humidity levels above 50% RH. You can increase the humidity levels around it by placing it in a tray of pebbles and water or misting it occasionally with a spray bottle.
Oyster Plant prefers a loose, well-draining soil. Use a light, airy potting mix that includes perlite, compost, or coir. The ideal soil pH is 6.0-7.0. You can adjust your soil’s pH by adding lime or sulfur to the soil mixture. Make sure to provide adequate drainage by adding extra rocks or pebbles to the soil mixture.
Oyster Plant does not require much fertilization, however if desired you can use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Fertilize your Oyster Plant once a month during the growing season, making sure to follow the instructions on the package for the correct amount to use. Increase the amount of fertilizer during the flowering season. Avoid over fertilization, as this can cause burn or damage to the foliage.
In general, Oyster Plant is resistant to pests. However spider mites, mealybugs, and whiteflies can be troublesome for this plant. In order to keep these pests at bay, you should routinely check your plant for signs of pests like white webs or sticky residue. If found, you can employ a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to combat these pests. Good air circulation helps to keep these critters away.
Oyster Plant prefers to be slightly rootbound, however if you notice your Oyster Plant's leaves are becoming smaller and the stem is getting too tall, it's time to repot it. Repotting should be done every two to three years in order to ensure that the plant has enough space to grow. When repotting, it is important to use a loose, well-draining soil and a pot with adequate drainage holes.
Pruning isn’t necessary for Oyster Plant. If the stems get too tall and leggy, you can trim them back to encourage new growth. This also helps to maintain an attractive shape. Make sure to use sharp gardening scissors and cut the plant back to the desired size and shape.
Mulching helps improve the soil around your plants and keep them healthy by protecting their roots. You can use a variety of materials to mulch your Oyster Plant, such as pine bark, compost, shredded leaves, and sawdust. Make sure to use a thin layer of mulch, no more than 2 inches thick.
Oyster Plant can be propagated through division or cuttings. You can divide the plant during repotting. Make sure to use sharp garden scissors or a knife to carefully divide the plant into multiple sections, using at least 2 or 3 roots per section. To propagate from cuttings, cut a few 3-4 inch stems using a sharp knife or pruners. Place the cuttings into soil where they should take root within a few weeks.
Due to its luscious foliage, Oyster Plant may need some type of support. As it grows in height, you can stake it using small garden stakes or twiggy branches. Make sure to use pieces of soft twine and tie it loosely around the stem. Avoid overly tight ties that can strangle the stem and cause it to rot.
Oyster Plant benefits from a rest period. Much like other plants, it will occasionally need a period of rest as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop. You can place your Oyster Plant in a shadier spot for a few weeks and reduce watering until the temperatures start to rise. This will help it to be healthier and more resilient when spring arrives again.
Oyster Plant is non-toxic to pets and people. You can enjoy the beauty of this plant without worrying about its toxicity.
