Octopus Plant

This plant is considered drought-tolerant so it does not require frequent watering. Water the plant when the soil feels dry to the touch, about once a week, but ensure not to water it too much, as this can lead to root rot. During especially hot or dry weather, and when it is actively growing, you might need to give it more water. Let the soil dry out before watering it again.

The Octopus Plant prefers direct sunlight but can tolerate partial and indirect sunlight just fine. If kept indoors, place it near a south-facing window with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, or alternatively, use a grow light two to three times a week to ensure it receives enough light. Keep in mind that too much light can cause the dark-green leaves to turn a lighter shade of green, as well as cause sunburn if left in direct sunlight for too long.

The Octopus Plant thrives best when it is in temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C). During winter, the plant is able to tolerate temperatures down to 50°F (10°C). It does not do well in temperatures below 45°F (7°C). It grows best in moderate humidity, but is also able to tolerate working in low humidity.

The plant is drought-resistant, so it does not require high air humiditiy for its growth. In fact, it prefers to grow in low air humidity of about 40%. Humidity that is too high can cause the plant to rot due to leaf mold.

The Octopus Plant prefers a cactus potting mix that is well-draining and contains a mix of potting soil, sand, perlite, and organic material. It will also thrive when planted in a standard commercial potting mix.

To keep the plant healthy, use a balanced fertilizer in the late spring, once the growing season has started. During the summer months, use a half-strength fertilizer every two to three weeks. In the winter months, fertilize only every three months. When fertilizing, use a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer for best results.

Mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites are some of the common pests attacking Sansevieria cylindrica. Mealybugs can be identified by white cotton-like masses on the plant’s stems and leaf axils. Aphids can be recognized by the many colors they come in. Spider mites are difficult to detect, but if you notice a yellowing of the leaves, that’s a sign of infestation. To get rid of these pests, spray the plant regularly with a soapy water. You can also use neem oil to prevent and control the pests. Place sticky traps near the plant to help control the population of the insects. Place yellow sticky traps near the plant to attract flying insects if present.

Sansevieria cylindrica should be repotted every two to three years during the spring months, as its roots need space to grow. When repotting, ensure to use a commercial potting soil mix that is well-aerated and drainable, to prevent waterlogging of the soil and root rot.

The Octopus Plant does not require regular pruning. You can, however, remove dead or damaged leaves as needed and also cut off any weak and unruly vines to promote healthier and bushier growth. Trim any flower stalks when the blooms have faded to promote new flowers.

Mulching is not necessary for this type of plant, but if you do wish to mulch, use gravel or pebbles on the topsoil. This will help to retain moisture in the soil and keep the weeds away.

Sansevieria cylindrica can be propagated in several ways, including seeds, leaf cuttings, and stem cuttings. To propagate through seed or leaf cuttings, they should be taken in early spring. For stem cuttings, take cutting that have a few leaves attached and let them air dry and callous over for a few days. Plant the cuttings in well-draining soil and water them regularly. Place the cuttings in bright, indirect lighting and in a warm environment.

The Octopus Plant does not require any sort of support as they are not very top-heavy. If the plant is very tall and tends to bend, you may add support with a garden stake or tie the stems with string.

The Octopus Plant does not need a period of rest and can be kept in the same condition all year round.
