Little Gem
Heuchera 'Little Gem' is an evergreen perennial with lush and attractive mounds of foliage. It can reach a max height of 12 inches with a max spread of 18 inches, and will bloom small, dainty, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pink and purple in the summer months. Its vibrant and deep green foliage is strikingly beautiful, and it can look great in any garden or pot. This plant is generally very low maintenance and will reward with its hardiness and its hard foliage.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' requires moderate and consistent watering during the growing season. During the winter months, it should be watered only as necessary when the soil is dry to the touch. It's important to water this plant in the morning so that the foliage will have enough time to dry off before evening. In summer it can also thrive with an occasional misting with a spray bottle to avoid over-watering.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' prefers partial to full shade in order to maintain the darker velvety green of the foliage. If situated in an area too sunny, the foliage can burn or turn yellow which will diminish its bright and vibrant appearance. This plant is tolerant of most lighting situations, but partial shadings with an ebb and flow of sunlight will keep the foliage vibrant.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' is winter hardy and will not be affected by temperatures dropping as low as 20 ?F (-6.7 ?C). This plant does best in temperatures between 35-75 ?F (2-24 ?C). Consistent cool temperatures will enable this plant to thrive and perform well for many years.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' prefers average outdoor humidity, but will do well in both dry and more moist climates. If indoors, misting or humidifiers can help maintain humidity levels and prolong the health and lifestyle of the plant.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' grows best in well-drained and loamy soils, or soils with an even mixture of sand, clay and compost. A good potting mix should be used to achieve an even soil structure and consistency. The soil should also be kept slightly moist at all times, but draining quickly enough that it does not become bogged down with water.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' should be fertilized with a balanced and well-rounded fertilizer in early spring before it begins to bloom and in mid-summer for additional support. A liquid or slow-release fertilizer should be applied according to the directions on the label. Over-fertilizing should be avoided, as it can cause burn and damage to the foliage.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' is fairly resistant to most pests or diseases, but can sometimes be troubled by aphids. If signs of infestation or discoloration in the leaves occur, an organic insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used to combat the pests. It is always important to follow the label instructions when applying any sort of product to a plant.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' only needs to be repotted every two or three years, or when the roots begin to press up against the side of the pot. Any time a plant has to be repotted, an organic and well-draining potting soil or mix should be used. Never use a harsh or synthetic product.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' requires minimal pruning and grooming throughout its life cycle. Every few years, any spent flower stems can be cut away to revitalize the plant and encourage more growth. Pruning away any dead or diseased foliage as it occurs will prevent any further spread or infection to the rest of the plant.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' can benefit from organic mulching material such as bark chips, straw or leaves. Mulching will help to prevent weed growth and retain moisture in the soil. If in a pot, proper drainage holes should be present and covered by the mulch material.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' is best propagated from division. Division should be done after flowering in the late winter or springtime when the plant is showing signs of new growth. New divisions should be divided only from healthy and disease free plants, and should be planted into moist, well-draining soil. After division, water to encourage good rooting.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' rarely needs additional support or staking, however if it's planted in a windy area, it may need support. If evidence of drooping or leaning stems appears, a stake can be put in place to provide additional support and stability.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' does not require a specific rest period, but may benefit from a slight decrease in temperatures in the fall and winter months. During these months, water should be reduced slightly, and fertilization should be stopped for 6-8 weeks as it enters a period of dormancy.
Heuchera 'Little Gem' is non-toxic to pets and people, and is safe for cats, dogs, and other animals.
