Kalanchoe
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, more commonly known as a Kalanchoe, is a succulent perennial in the Crassulaceae family. It is native to Madagascar and it is popular as a houseplant because of its attractive foliage and long-blooming flowers. Kalanchoe is a drought-tolerant plant that prefers bright indirect sunlight and the stems become woodier with age. This low-maintenance succulent makes an excellent addition to any indoor garden.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a drought-tolerant succulent and can be prone to root rot if watered too much. For this reason, it should only be watered when the soil has been dry for at least a few days. When it is time to water, only water the soil until moisture is observed to be present. It is very important not to overwater this plant. Additionally, Kalanchoe should not be watered until the soil is completely dry.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Morning sun is ideal, as the intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. Kalanchoe should be placed in an area of the house with good air circulation, such as near an open window. The sunnier location, the more vibrant the colors of the plant will be. In especially hot climates, the succulent will need to be placed in a shaded or partially shaded location.
Kalanchoe is a drought-tolerant succulent and prefers warmer temperatures between 65°F (18°C) and 75°F (24°C). In temperatures below 60°F (15°C), the kalanchoe will not be able to grow and will go dormant. Kalanchoe will suffer in hot temperatures over 80°F (27°C) and should be placed in a shaded or partially shaded area if the temperatures exceed this range.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana does not require much humidity and, in fact, prefers drier air. The air should be free from both excess humidity and excess dryness. This succulent can be sensitive to drafty or increased airflow, so it's important to keep it away from open windows or air vents.
Kalanchoe needs soil that is fast-draining and not too dense. A succulent mix or cactus mix is an ideal potting soil for the Kalanchoe. This type of soil will provide the proper drainage for the plant while also allowing it to retain some moisture for growth. Alternatively, you can mix together equal parts of potting soil, sand, and perlite for good drainage.
Kalanchoe should be fertilized lightly and only once monthly during its growing season. Fertilize with an all-purpose or cactus fertilizer and dilute at half strength than what is recommended on the label. Kalanchoe should not be fertilized in the winter or when it is not actively growing.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is susceptible to a wide variety of pests, such as mealybugs, scale insects, whiteflies, and spider mites. These pests can be killing to the plant and should be dealt with quickly in order to protect the health of the plant. To get rid of these pests, start by removing any affected leaves and stems. Then, spray the plant with an insecticidal soap or an organic insecticide. If the problem does not improve, contact your local garden center for more advice.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana does not need to be repotted very often. If the plant has outgrown its pot or the soil has become compacted, repot it in fresh soil with new potting mix. The best time to repot a Kalanchoe is in the spring or summer when the plant is actively growing. An appropriate sized pot for a Kalanchoe will be between 4 and 6 inches in diameter.
Pruning is not necessary for Kalanchoe but it can be helpful to keep the plant looking its best. Pruning with a sterile cutting tool will reduce excess foliage and revive unhealthy portions of the plant. Pruning also helps to encourage more blooms and promote bushier growth. Prune at the end of the bloom period to encourage more compact growth and fuller blooms.
Mulching is not necessary for Kalanchoe but it can be beneficial to help retain moisture in the soil. A thin layer of mulch, such as straw or hay, can give the plant an extra boost of moisture and nutrients. Make sure not to use too much mulch, as it can retain too much moisture and cause root rot.
Kalanchoe can be propagated in several ways. Cuttings can be taken from mature and healthy stems and allowed to dry before planting. You can also root stem cuttings directly in water. Another way to propagate Kalanchoe is through leaf-cutting. Pieces of leaves can be removed from the stem and deposited in sterilized soil to grow new plants.
Since Kalanchoe can grow up to 24 inches tall, it may need support as it grows. If the stems are beginning to bend and become droopy, use stakes or bamboo poles to provide additional support for the stems. This will give the stems the support they need to remain upright and strong.
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana does not have a specific rest period. In the wintertime, the plant will enter a period of dormancy where there will be a decrease in growth and fewer flowers. During this time, reduce watering and fertilization to give the kalanchoe a chance to rest and regroup. In the springtime, the plant will begin to bloom and grow again with increased sunlight and water.
Kalanchoe is toxic to cats and dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you suspect that your pet has ingested any part of the plant, seek veterinary attention immediately.
