Ice Plant 'Cooperi'
The Ice Plant (Delosperma Cooperi), is an evergreen perennial succulent that is native to mountainous areas in South Africa. It has adapted to hot, dry climates and forms masses of colorful, star-shaped flowers that open during the day and close at night. This succulent is perfect for cultivating in many garden landscapes for the summer and late fall season. In the winter months, it should be brought indoors, where it can be grown as a container plant.
The Ice Plant has lower water needs than most other plants. During periods of active growth, it should be watered every two to three weeks. In dry or arid climates, frequency should be increased. It’s important not to overwater the Ice Plant, as this can cause root rot and other problems. During the winter months, the frequency of watering should be lowered. Place your thumb around two inches deep in the soil; if the soil feels dry, give it a thorough watering.
Ice Plant thrives best in full sun, but can tolerate a bit of shade. It’s important to avoid direct sunlight when the plant is in the sun, as it can cause the colors of the flowers to fade.
The Ice Plant can tolerate temperatures up to 95 F (35 C) during the day and 50 F (10 C) at night. During the winter months, it’s best to bring the plant indoors so that temperatures stay above freezing at all times. Keep it in a room that is between 65 and 75 F (18 and 24 C).
The Ice Plant can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels. An ideal range is between 30 and 65%, but it can survive in higher levels. During the summer, it is best to mist the plant a few times per week.
The Ice Plant prefers soil that is well-draining and loose. A mix of compost, peat moss, and sand works well; adding small rocks to the mix can help improve drainage. The pH level should be 6-7.
Fertilization is not necessary for the Ice Plant, but it can benefit from a boost of nutrients during the growing season. A balanced fertilizer should be used, applied to the soil every four to six weeks. It is important to avoid fertilizing the plant in the late fall or winter.
The Ice Plant is relatively pest-free, but may be prone to mealy bugs, aphids, and other common pests. It is important to inspect the plant regularly for signs of pests and take action if they are found. To control mealybugs, use a cotton swab or neem oil to dab the insects. For aphids, spray the plant with a soapy water solution. Neem or insecticidal soap can also be used for larger infestations. Additionally, avoid introducing insects to the area, as this will make it more prone to infection.
The Ice Plant should be repotted every two to three years in a slightly larger container. Spring is the best time of year to repot the plant, when it is actively growing. Repotting should be done carefully to avoid damaging the roots.
Prune the Ice Plant lightly in the late fall to promote more vigorous growth in the following season. It is important to remove dead or damaged leaves and stems to keep the plant healthy. Additionally, removing spent blooms will increase the longevity of the plant.
Mulch can be used to keep the soil moist and to improve the aesthetics of the plant. A light layer of gravel, shale, or bark is suitable for the Ice Plant.
The Ice Plant can be propagated by planting cuttings in the spring or early summer. Take cuttings that are around four inches long, and remove any flowers or buds. Place the cuttings in well-draining soil and keep them moist. In a few weeks, they should take root and establish themselves as new plants.
The stems of the Ice Plant may need support in periods of vigorous growth. Bamboo poles can help keep the branches from breaking from the weight of the flowers and foliage.
During the winter months, the Ice Plant need to go through a period of dormancy to rest and renew. Place the plant in a cool room with temperatures between 50 and 55 F (10 and 13 C) and water every two to three weeks.
The Ice Plant is not toxic to cats, dogs, or other animals.
