Hosta Royal Standard
Hosta 'Royal Standard' is an evergreen, fast-growing perennial plant that thrives in shady conditions. Its light green leaves are large, heart-shaped with yellow veins. In midsummer, spikes of white or lavender flowers appear. 'Royal Standard' is named for its regal stature and distinctive color scheme. It is native to mountain regions of Central and Eastern Asia.
Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. In temperate climates, water your hosta 'Royal Standard' about every five days during the warmer months. During colder months, water only when the topsoil feels dry. If temperatures are high and the Hosta is located in a sunny spot, you may need to water it every 3 days.
This plant prefers bright, indirect light. Though it can tolerate full shade, we recommend partial sun for the best results. Strong direct sunlight should be avoided, especially the midday sun, as it can burn the leaves and cause discoloration.
Hosta 'Royal Standard' thrives in temperatures from 50-73°F (10-23°C). Ideal temperature range may vary depending on the season. It cannot survive when temperatures go below 32°F (0°C) for extended periods of time.
This plant prefers high humidity. During the growing season, mist the foliage regularly with distilled or lukewarm water. Using a humidifier will also help maintain the appropriate humidity levels.
This plant prefers a light, fertile soil. A good mixture of equal parts potting soil, sand, and peat is suitable. If you're using a pot, make sure it has drainage holes to prevent excess water from collecting at the bottom. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can be detrimental to the plant.
Fertilize your hosta 'Royal Standard' twice a year in the spring and summer. Avoid using chemical fertilizers as they can damage the roots of the plant. A natural, organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion, compost, or manure will be more beneficial to your Hosta.
Hosta 'Royal Standard' is generally pest-free. However, slugs can cause severe foliage damage. To get rid of them, manually pick them off the plant, or sprinkle diatomaceous earth around its base. If the slugs are too numerous, you may need to consult a professional pest control expert.
Repot your hosta 'Royal Standard' every other year in the spring or autumn months. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one and use a loose, well-draining potting soil. Start with a generous layer of potting mix at the bottom. Place the hosta in the pot and fill in the sides with potting mix. Do not pack the soil too tightly around the roots.
Pruning isn't usually necessary, but if you want to tidy up your hosta 'Royal Standard', you can cut back flower stalks and foliage. Be sure to use sharp, clean pruning shears to make precise cuts. Dead or brown leaves should also be removed.
Organic mulch materials, such as wood chips, pine needles, hay, and straw, can be added during the summer months to protect the roots from the heat. Be sure to keep a shallow layer of mulch, about one inch thick, and make it easy for the plant to access the soil below.
Propagating hostas is straightforward. You can divide your existing plant or grow new hostas from seed. To divide the plant, wait until the end of the growing season and carefully dig out your hosta. Use a sharp knife to divide the rhizomes into sections. Plant each section in a new pot with potting mix or plant them directly into your garden.
Hosta 'Royal Standard' will benefit from support, especially in windy conditions. A stake or support stake can be used for extra stability. It should be inserted several inches into the ground and positioned next to the plant.
For best results, give your hosta 'Royal Standard' a rest period. It should go into a dormant phase during the winter months. Cut back the foliage and discontinue watering during this time. In the spring, resume watering and the plant will start to grow again.
Hosta 'Royal Standard' is not toxic to cats and dogs. It is, however, mildly toxic to humans in large amounts. So, be sure to keep it out of reach of kids and pets.
