Geranium 'Rozanne'
Geranium 'Rozanne' is a beautiful and durable perennial. It's a great choice for beginners, as it provides long-lasting blooms, tolerant of a variety of conditions. With its profusion of lavender-blue, five-petalled flowers, it makes a short, dense groundcover, and its foliage is divided into lobed, ivy-like shapes. It prefers moist, well-drained soil, and blooms from late spring to early fall. It is hardy to zone 5, and is even pest and disease-resistant, needing little care to remain healthy.
Water the Geranium 'Rozanne' regularly, allowing the soil to remain evenly moist but not soggy. If the plant begins to show signs of dehydration such as drooping or wilting leaves, water it thoroughly until there is water running through the drainage holes and a small stream of water spews from the bottom pot. Pay close attention to the plant and make sure not to overwater it, as this will cause root rot.
Geranium 'Rozanne' enjoys full sun or partial shade, making it a great choice for many gardens. It prefers bright sunlight, particularly in cooler climates, though it can tolerate some light shade. It should be placed in an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day, though partial shade florets are still possible. If located in full sun, keep an eye on the soil, as dry patches may occur if not watered sufficiently.
Geranium 'Rozanne' is known to tolerate cold weather and frost. However, it prefers a temperature between 15°C and 26°C (59°F-78°F) and will perform at its best in a temperature range of 20°C to 24°C (68°F-75°F). It will thrive more in warmer climates such as USDA hardiness zone 8 to 10, placing it in the medium range of hardiness.
This plant prefers a relative humidity level between 50 to 70%. Higher humidity may lead to powdery mildew. Overly dry air however, may be a detriment to the health and vigour of the plant. To help increase humidity for more tropical zones, misting the plant on a regular basis or placing it closest possible to a humidifier.
Geranium 'Rozanne' prefers soils that are consistently moist but that also drain well. A combination of organic matter such as composted manure, with loamy soils is a great choice as it will provide energetic when required and hold moisture when necessary. For containers, a mix of soil and potting compost works great. A soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is optimal, providing the perfect blend of moisture, nutrient availability, and aeration.
Fertilization is not necessary for Geranium 'Rozanne' but can be beneficial when the plant is in need of a nutritional boost. A balanced liquid fertilizer can be applied every few weeks during the blooming season. Apply only a diluted nutrient solution in order to not cause fertilizer burn. To avoid over fertilizing, make sure to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Geranium 'Rozanne' is considered to be pest-resistant but can be affected by certain pests. Aphid and spider mite infestations are typical, but can be minimized with proper plant care. Wash the plants leaves off with a stream of water to remove a small infestation. For a more severe infestation, apply insecticidal soaps to the affected foliage. Be sure to cover the whole leaf surface and repeat every few days or until the infestation is gone.
Geranium 'Rozann'e should be repotted roughly every two to three years. A good rule of thumb is to look for signs of overcrowding such as roots coming out of the bottom of the pot. When the plant needs to be repotted, make sure to use a pot that is 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the current one and fill it with a well-draining soil. Allowing enough space for the roots to spread out will contribute to a healthier, more vibrant plant.
When it comes to pruning, Geranium 'Rozanne' responds well to trimming. Pruning gives the plant an overall full and healthy appearance, encourages new growth, and extends the lifespan of the plant. To prune, it's best to use sterilized shears and trim away small portions of all tips, as well as any dead leaves or stems. Always make sure the plant has at least two to three leaf sets of healthy foliage below the cut before trimming back further.
Mulching is beneficial for retaining moisture in the soil and keeping the weeds at bay. For Geranium 'Rozanne', applying a layer of organic mulch, such as compost, wood chips, or leaf mold, will help the soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid applying a thick layer of mulch directly onto the stem of the plant, as this may rot it.
Geranium 'Rozanne' can be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer or early fall. Gather the shoot tips that have to show brown discoloration, approximately 4 inches long with 4-6 leaves attached. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and stick them in very light, well-draining soil. Put the pot in a warm spot, out of direct sunlight, and keep the soil moist. After 4-8 weeks, the cuttings should have rooted. When a small plantlet grows from the nodes, it is time to transplant it to its own pot.
Given that Geranium 'Rozanne' has a more fragile Habitat, it may require support as it grows and blooms. Stakes are often used to provide support and guide the plants growth, preventing it from becoming too heavy and flopping over. If the plant is already flopping, gently tie the stems up with twine or string, focusing on the base of the stems, but be mindful not to damage them.
Geranium 'Rozanne' prefers a rest period once the florets die off, during which the energy gathered by the leaves can be used to restore the plant. During its rest period, the plant should be kept in cooler temperatures and watered less frequently. As soon as the temperatures begin to rise, the plant can be taken out of its rest and it will start to bloom again.
Fortunately, Geranium 'Rozanne' is not toxic to cats or dogs, making it a safe addition to any household with pets. It is always best to err on the side of caution, however, and not expose your pet to any plant without researching its toxicity.
