Apple Geranium
Apple Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), sometimes called 'Rose scented Geranium', is an evergreen, fragrant perennial. They often have gray-green to dark green foliage flecked with brown. These aromatic plants are native to South Africa and can range in size from a few inches to several feet in height, depending on the variety. Apple Geraniums can produce clusters of small, white or pink flowers, although the flowers are small and not the main attraction. When grown indoors, many varieties of Apple Geranium will remain relatively small and can make an attractive addition to any windowsill garden when grown in a container.
Apple Geranium should be watered when the top 1-2″ of the soil has dried out. Some like their soil to be slightly moist, while others prefer it on the dry side. The key is to provide consistent moisture without overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Always water in the sink to avoid getting water on the foliage as this can lead to mildew or other fungal issues.
Apple Geranium is considered to be a low to moderate light plant and thrives in areas with bright filtered light. A south-facing window, or an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid drafty windowsills, as Apple Geranium does not like drafts or sudden temperature changes. For best results, stretch and rotate your Apple Geranium periodically to ensure even light exposure.
Apple Geranium thrives in temperatures between 60-75°F (16-24°C) during the day and 55-60°F (12-15°C) at night. In colder weather, the leaves may become slightly wilted if temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). Apple Geranium can tolerate short periods of hot temperatures but should not be exposed to temperatures higher than 80°F (26°C).
Apple Geranium prefers moderately humid conditions, especially during the peak growing season. To increase the ambient humidity around your plant, you can mist it twice a week. If the climate is too dry, you can use a humidifier or place a tray of pebbles filled with water underneath your plant. Make sure to empty the tray regularly and refresh the water to avoid the buildup of bacteria.
Apple Geranium prefers a light, well-draining, and organic-rich soil mix. You can use a commercially-available potting soil mix or create your own using 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 vermiculite, perlite, or sand. Make sure to adjust the ratio for the specific needs of your plant.
Apple Geraniums should be fertilized about once a month during the peak growing season, with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Fertilizing during the winter resting period is not necessary. The fertilizer should immediately be rinsed off the leaves to avoid leaf burn. To achieve a bushier growth form, a slow-release fertilizer can be incorporated into the soil during the repotting process.
Apple Geranium is generally pest and disease-free, however it can occasionally become affected by aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, whiteflies, and spider mites. To prevent or treat an infestation, thoroughly inspect the plant for any signs of pests and manually remove them or use an insecticidal soap or neem oil solution. To prevent reinfestation, keep the houseplant in a well-ventilated environment and groom it regularly to eliminate hiding spots for pests.
The Apple Geranium should be repotted every two to three years, in the spring when the risings growth starts. When repotting, be sure to use a well-draining, soilless potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Make sure to gently loosen the roots before transplanting into the new pot to ensure proper drainage. Once repotted, water the Apple Geranium lightly, but do not over water.
Apple Geranium should be pruned in the spring to encourage longer branches and more flowers. Pruning can be done by cutting back branches to a length of 1-2 inches and removing any dead or damaged foliage. Prune the geranium lightly and always make sure to use sharp, sterilized tools to avoid spreading disease or damaging the plant.
Mulch can be applied to the roots of the Apple Geranium to help retain moisture and keep the soil temperature even. You can use straw, bark, or other materials as mulch for this plant, and it can be applied in the spring. Make sure to leave a 2-inch space between the mulch and the stem to ensure proper air circulation.
Apple Geraniums can be propagated through stem cuttings and seeds. To propagate through stem cuttings, select a healthy stem from the parent plant, remove any foliage at the bottom, and strip off any lower leaves. Place the cutting in a pot filled with a moist, soilless potting mix and water it. Place the pot in a warm area with bright light and wait for the roots to grow. It can take up to two months for geranium cuttings to fully root. Apple Geraniums can also be propagated through seeds. To do this, plant the seeds in a container filled with a moist, soilless potting mix. Place the container in a warm area with bright light and keep the soil moist. The seeds should begin to germinate in 2-3 weeks.
Smaller varieties of Apple Geraniums may not require support, but taller varieties may need it. If necessary, use a trellis or stakes to support the weight of the plant and the flowers. Always make sure to use a stake that is taller than the plant when it is fully grown so that the stake does not damage the roots or canopy of the plant.
Apple Geraniums go through a normal winter resting period that begins in the fall. During this time, the plant will slow down its growth and the leaves and flowers will start to die off. This is a perfect time to prune and repot your Apple Geranium if needed. During the resting period, the plant should be watered less frequently and given less fertilizer.
Apple Geraniums are not toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, but it can be mildly irritating to their skin, eyes, and mouths. If you have pets, it is best to keep the plant out of their reach to prevent any potential issues.
