Flowering Maple
Flowering Maple is a genus of the family Malvaceae, with almost 200 species of annuals, perennials and shrubs that are found in many parts of the world. Flowering Maple is a vigorous evergreen shrub usually propagated from softwood cuttings and is covered with small, deep green, glossy leaves, sometimes variegated. The leaves are carried on erect or slightly arching stalks. This plant bears small cup-shaped yellow, orange, pink, or white flowers that bloom either singly or in clusters. It is relatively easy to care for, and can bear a wide range of temperatures and climates.
Abutilon must have moist soil at all times, however do not leave it inundated in too much water. The soil needs to be kept moist, but not soggy. To avoid overwatering, leave the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. Also, be cautious of overfilling its pot with soil which can result in water-logged conditions. Additionally, be careful not to let it completely dry out, as this will cause the leaves to fall off and the plant to wilt.
Abutilon hybridum is a moderately light demanding plant that requires bright ambient light, however not direct sunlight. Its ideal location should have an eastern exposure or bright light all day. This plant will do best when it is placed in a spot which is warm, but won’t burn it’s delicate foliage. This prevention from direct sunlight should also be taken in the moment the temperature increases or when the plant is placed outside for long periods of time.
Abutilon needs warm temperatures to be kept and developed. The best temperature ranges for keeping the plant healthy throughout the year are between 50°F to 80°F (10°C to 26°C). Outside of this temperature range, the plant may suffer from significant damage.
This particular plant needs humidity to stay healthy, so keep an eye open for its needs. Keep the humidity levels high by introducing a humidifier in the surrounding area of the plant. Additionally, misting the leaves during sedentary seasons can help keep the humidity levels up.
When harvesting soil for its pot, a well-draining potting mix in recommended. Additionally, sand and perlite can be added in order for the soil to have better aeration and drainage. This mix should also contain some organic matter for extra drainage. A pH range of between 5.0 and 7.0 is ideal.
The soil should be fertilized every 4 to 6 weeks during its growing season with either a liquid or a granular fertilizer. An all-purpose houseplant fertilizer should be sufficient for the flower’s development. If a granular fertilizer is used, make sure it is watered in well with the first few waterings after being exposed. During the rest period, fertilization should be decreased to once every 6-8 weeks or resort to weak fertilizer everytime the plant is watered. Additionally, deter from applying fertilizer to dry soil, as this may damage its roots.
Pests may affect Abutilon’s health and ruin it’s appearance. Common pests include aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. If an infestation is noticed, turn to a houseplant insecticide. All sprays or soaps should be used in accordance with the directions on the bottle. Fungus and molds can also be frustrating. Usually, this is a sign of overwatering or too high humidity in the home. If noticed, discourage the conditions that lead to fungal and mold growth and then turn to a fungicide.
In general, it is recommended to repot the Flowering Maple annually. It is best to do so during the spring season when the plant is still not too far into its growing season. This makes it easier for the Abutilon to get used to a new pot or different soil mix. An appropriate potting soil should be chosen and the size of the previous pot should be one or two sizes larger when repotting. This will create more space for the roots to breathe.
The Flowering Maple does not need to be pruned, but you can prune it to maintain the desired shape. The ideal time for pruning is in early summer when the plant is still slightly dormant. Dead, diseased, or broken branches should be cut away. Also, any shoots that are out of shape can be trimmed. Avoid cutting green branches as they are full of life.
Mulch is recommended for this plant, as it will help reduce the risk of root rot and restore calcium in the soil. It will also help with the consistency in the temperature and the soil’s moisture levels. The ideal material to use is bark, as it has the ability to hold the soil, give off necessary nutrients, and provide a barrier between the roots and the soil.
This particular plant is best propagated with softwood cuttings. The stem must be cut off with sterilized equipment and then placed into a potting mix that is well drained. A plastic bag must be placed over the pot to create a mini environment that will retain the moisture and range of temperature. Additionally, direct sunlight should be avoided at all cost, as it will burn the cutting. The cutting should be checked often and watered frequently.
As a vigorous and heavy growing plant, a trellis or other support should be put in place at a young age in order to encourage upright development and health. This will also prevent the stems from sagging and creating an untidy shape.
Abutilon will usually enter a rest period come winter. During this period, the amount of water given to the plant should be significantly reduced while the plant’s temperature should be kept slightly lower. As the plant is very light demanding, more light must be provided during the winter, this will create the right development and structure for the following season.
Flowering Maple is non-toxic to pets as long as the pet does not ingest it. If the pet is exposed and displays symptons, extreme caution is advised and medical attention should be sought.
