Desert Rose
Desert Rose, also known as Adenium obesum, is an evergreen succulent plant native to the Arabian Peninsula and certain regions of East Africa and Madagascar. Some of its most notable characteristics are its multiple branches and bright green leaves. In addition, its most attractive feature is its bright pink/maroon blossoms, which appear in clumps during summer and fall. Desert Rose is typically a low-maintenance houseplant that is perfect for people with busy schedules, and it’s also relatively easy to care for. Because of its preference for hot weather and arid climates, the Desert Rose requires very little water. It’s best to water it around one to two times a week, but make sure that the soil is nice and dry before you do so. Too much water may lead to root rot, so be careful!Though it doesn't require a vast amount of sunlight, Desert Rose does best when exposed to some sun during the day. Too little sunlight can lead to poor growth and browned leaf tips. You may also want to consider providing it with a bright windowsill or a room with indirect sunlight.Desert Rose doesn’t need to be fertilized very often, and only needs to be done a few times a year. A balanced fertilizer that is diluted to half the strength should be sufficient, and should be applied when you repot the plant or during the growing season.Lastly, the Desert Rose also likes consistent temperatures. The best temperature range is between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (13-24 degrees Celsius). Fluctuations in temperature may lead to challenges for it, so try to maintain a fairly consistent temperature in the room.

Desert Rose’s preferred relative humidity range is 40-50%. It may require a bit more water when in dry air, but keep an eye on the overall health of the plant. It’s important to ensure it’s not overwatered, as this could lead to root rot.
Desert Rose prefers a light and well-draining soil mix, such as cactus-specific soils or all-purpose potting soils with perlite. The soil should be allowed to dry out before watering it again, as overwatering can lead to issues with rot.
Desert Rose doesn’t need to be fertilized very often and should only really be done a few times a year. A balanced fertilizer that is diluted to half the strength should be sufficient, and should be applied when you repot the plant or during the growing season. It’s important to avoid over-fertilizing, as this can burn the roots and leaves of the plant.
Desert Rose is susceptible to common houseplant pests, such as mealybugs, scales, and aphids. These pests can be damaging to the plant if left untreated. The best way to get rid of them is to use horticultural oil or dish soap mixed with water, and apply it gently to the affected areas. It’s also important to keep the plant tidy and to regularly inspect it for signs of pests or other anomalies.
Desert Rose should be repotted every few years when its root system outgrows the pot. This is typically done in the early spring before the plant begins to actively grow. Be sure to use a pot with good drainage holes, and use a cactus-specific soil mix or an all-purpose potting soil with perlite for extra draining capabilities.
To keep Desert Rose looking tidy, you can prune it about once a year, with the best time being during either late spring or early summer. Start by cutting off any dead or dying leaves and then trimming any overgrown branches. Be sure to use very sharp pruning shears to avoid any damage to the plant.
Mulching Desert Rose is optional, but if you choose to do it, make sure to use loose mulch such as bark or cedar chips so that it won’t suffocate the roots. It’s important to keep the mulch away from the trunk and stem of the plant to avoid any rot or mold.
Desert Rose can be propagated through a few different methods. The most common method is air layering, which involves wounding the stem and allowing it to form a callus before being potted in a soil mixture. You may also propagate it through stem cuttings and seeds, although air layering will yield the best results.
Desert Rose doesn’t require any support while it’s growing, but as it gets bigger, you may want to consider planting it in a pot with a stake for extra stability.
Desert Rose doesn’t require a specific rest period, but as with all plants, can benefit from a few weeks of dry or cooler weather, usually in the winter months. During this time, cut back on the fertilizer and water, and move the plant away from direct sunlight.
Desert Rose is non-toxic and is safe for pets who may be curious about it. However, if you have any concerns, it’s best to err on the side of caution and keep it out of reach of any pets.
