Cyclamen purpurascens
Cyclamen purpurascens, or also known as cyclamen, is a perennial, flowering plant that belongs to the family Primulaceae, the primrose family. It is a small-sized species that has a superficial rootstock. The leaves vary in size and color starting from red to dark green, and they have silver-purple markings. The flowers are usually red-pink and they appear mostly during winter and spring. It is a native plant of Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and some parts of eastern Europe.
Cyclamen purpurascens is fairly drought tolerant, and over-watering can lead to root rot and other problems. Watering should be done in moderation. It is important to make sure that the soil is dry to the touch before watering. As with most plants, it is best to water from the bottom. When watering, use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the root system. Give the cyclamen slightly less water during the summer months, and slightly more during the fall and winter. The soil should also be drained properly.
Typically, Cyclamen purpurascens prefers partial shade, but some varieties prefer full sun. The light requirements for this houseplant can be challenging to meet indoors. Placing the plant near a north- or east-facing window is the best way to ensure that the plant receives enough, but not too much, light. Avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight as this can damage the leaves and leave them with bleached patches.
Consistency in temperature is important for quickly-growing cyclamens. The ideal temperature for growing cyclamens is between 65 and 70°F (18-21°C) during the day and 60-65°F (15-18°C) at night. Prolonged exposure to temperatures lower than 50°F (10°C) can significantly delay growth and flowering.
This plant thrives in moderate to high humidity. Cyclamen purpurascens will do well in rooms with 10-30% humidity. If the room or home is too dry, the leaves may turn yellow and fall off. It is best to use a room humidifier, or place the plant near other plantings that can help it retain moisture. Additionally, you can mist the leaves of the plant to increase humidity.
Cyclamen purpurascens needs loose and well-drained soil that is rich in organic material. A soil that contains a mix of loam, peat moss, and sand is ideal. The soil should also be kept slightly moist but not overly wet. To ensure adequate drainage, you can add a layer of gravel to the pot before adding soil.
Fertilizing is not required for Cyclamen purpurascens but, if you want to give your plant a boost of nutrients, you can fertilize it with water-soluble fertilizer every three weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during the rest period of the plant because it can damage the roots and necessitate repotting.
Cyclamen purpurascens can be occasionally bothered by some common houseplant pests, such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. To get rid of these pests, it is important to carefully inspect the plant for any signs of infestation and act quickly. If the infestation is not too bad, you can try to wash the pests off with a strong stream of water. Additionally, you can wipe the affected areas with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol, dissolved in warm water (3 parts of alcohol to 1 part of water). If the infestation is more severe, you can use insecticidal or miticidal soap which is effective but also safe.
Cyclamen purpurascens typically does not need to be repotted, but it is important to monitor the growth of the plant and the health of the soil. Repotting should take place every two to three years or when the plant becomes root-bound. During the process, make sure to use a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one and well-draining soil.
Cyclamen purpurascens does not need regular pruning, but it is helpful to remove dead or damaged leaves, which can be a potential breeding ground for pests. Deadheading is also important if you want to keep the plant flowering. After the flowers have withered, they should be removed as they can detract from the aesthetics of the plant.
Mulching is not generally required for this houseplant, but if you would like to add a layer of mulch it should only be lightly applied. Bark or other organic mulches can be used.
Cyclamen purpurascens can be propagated via seed, division, or tissue culture. Seeds should be planted in a fertile, well-draining soil mixture and kept moist. Division should be done when the plant is dormant and the root system is lightly disturbed to preserve as many roots as possible. Tissue culture is the most reliable method of propagation and is best done by professionals.
Cyclamen purpurascens does not require any type of support, as it is a fairly small plant. If the flowers or leaves tend to droop, you can provide additional support via bamboo sticks or stakes.
Cyclamen purpurascens may need up to two months of rest in the late spring or early summer. During that period, the plant should be kept relatively dry and warm, and the leaves should be allowed to die back naturally.
Cyclamen purpurascens is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It is important to keep the plant out of reach of children and animals and to be careful while handling the plant as some parts of the plant can cause skin irritation.
