Cryptanthus bivittatus
Cryptanthus bivittatus is a bromeliad species native to southeastern Brazil, in the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. It typically grows in the coastal mountains and hilly areas of the region on rocks and tree trunks in open forests or in the partial shade. It is a terrestrial plant that tolerates both dry and moist conditions. The rosette of leaves is green and has silvery cross-stripes. It produces a cream-colored inflorescence with leaves and bracts in a star shape.
Cryptanthus bivittatus needs to be kept consistently moist, but not wet or soggy. The top of the soil should be allowed to dry out slightly between watering. Water with lukewarm water on a regular basis as the soil begins to dry out. If growing outdoors, the plant will need more frequent watering than if it were in a greenhouse.
Cryptanthus bivittatus needs bright, indirect sunlight to grow and thrive. When growing indoors, place it in a west- or east-facing window. Preferably, the plants should receive 2-4 hours of mid- to late-day sun for best results and to help bring out the silvery splashes in the leaves. If the leaves start to turn yellow, move the plant to a slightly shadier area.
Cryptanthus bivittatus prefers warm temperatures of 68-86°F (20-30°C). For optimal growth, it should be placed in an area with night temperatures between 68-75°F (20-24°C). It can survive beyond this temperature range, but growth slows beyond these levels. Never allow temperatures to drop below 40°F (4°C)
Cryptanthus bivittatus needs high levels of relative humidity, with 60-70% being ideal, and 40-50% being the lower threshold. If both the temperature and humidity are too low for extended periods, it can cause problems for the plant, resulting in stunted growth and deficiencies. If the plants are kept continuously too wet, root rot can occur.
Cryptanthus bivittatus grows best in well-draining soil with a light) to sandy texture. To ensure the soil drains quickly, it should be a mixture of 1 part potting soil, 1 part perlite, and 1 part coarse sand. This mixture should be kept moist but not wet, and should be allowed to dry out slightly before watering.
Cryptanthus bivittatus should be fertilized during the growing season (spring and summer). A balanced liquid fertilizer should be used at quarter strength and applied every two weeks. If the fertilizer contains micronutrients, including iron, it may be used even more frequently. During the winter months, fertilizer should be reduced or eliminated.
The main pests to watch out for with Cryptanthus bivittatus are mealybugs, scale, thrips, and aphids. All of these pests can be treated with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Make sure to isolate affected plants, as pests can quickly spread and become an infestation. Inspect the plant closely, and monitor regularly to catch and treat pest problems early.
Cryptanthus bivittatus should be repotted once every two years using a sterile, well-draining potting soil, such as one designed for epiphytic plants. Before repotting, water the plant thoroughly and then gently remove it from the pot. Repot in a larger pot with the same type of soil and gently press around the base of the plant to ensure the soil is in contact with the roots.
Pruning is not necessary for Cryptanthus bivittatus. Pruning may be done for aesthetic purposes only, to remove dead or damaged leaves, or to remove offsets or diseased foliage. Pruning can be done at any time of the year, but avoid pruning excessively as this may weaken the plant.
Mulching is not necessary for Cryptanthus bivittatus. If desired, a light, organic mulch can be used to help conserve moisture and protect the roots from direct sunlight. Mulch should be removed regularly to prevent rot and pests.
Cryptanthus bivittatus can easily be propagated by division or by seed. To propagate by division, gently remove the offsets from the base of the mother plant. Place the offsets in a new pot with the same type of soil and water thoroughly. To propagate from seed, sow the seeds in a seed starting mix and gently press them into the soil. Place in a warm, semi-shaded area and water regularly.
Cryptanthus bivittatus does not need any type of support. With consistent care, the plant will form a sturdy enough rosette that support is unnecessary.
Cryptanthus bivittatus does not need a rest period, but its growth rate will slow down in the winter months. To ensure its continued growth, supplemental lighting in the form of a growlight may be needed, especially if growing indoors.
Cryptanthus bivittatus is not toxic to pets, but it may cause minor irritation if ingested. Pets should be kept away from the plant to ensure they do not ingest any parts of it.
