Black Mondo Grass
Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') is an evergreen perennial in the lily family. It’s native to East Asian countries like Japan, the Ryukyu islands, Taiwan, and Korea. A unique feature of Black Mondo Grass that makes it desirable for gardeners is its dark, glossy foliage which makes it a perfect accent to other plants. In addition, its groundcover-like, low-mounding texture creates an aesthetic value and makes it an ideal choice for edging, mass planting, or as a “filler” for larger potted plants. Its low-care nature and fast-growing spread makes it an obvious choice for creating a serene appearance.
Black Mondo Grass is an easy-care plant that does not require much water. Water this plant sparingly until it becomes well established. Once established, water once every one to two weeks making sure the soil remains slightly damp and not soggy. Watering once a week will usually suffice.

Black Mondo Grass thrives in average home humidity or higher. If the air is too dry, misting every couple of days will help to keep your plant happy. If you home is too humid, it is not a problem at all.
Black Mondo Grass grows best in a loose, well-draining soil mix with plenty of organic matter. A good mixture is one part peat moss, one part sand, and one part garden soil. This soil should be kept moist, but not soggy.
Fertilization is not necessary for healthy growth of Black Mondo Grass. If you choose to fertilize, use an all-purpose liquid fertilizer at half-strength during the spring and summer months.
Black Mondo Grass is vulnerable to certain pests like mealy bugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Signs that your plant may be infested includes white cottony masses or webs, yellowing leaves, and the presence of tiny insects. To prevent the spread of these pests if your plant is infested, isolate the plant and use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently wipe off the critters. You can also use neem oil or a horticultural soap to help combat the infestation.
Black Mondo Grass tends to remain beautiful even when it is placed in the same pot for long periods of time. However, this plant should be repotted every two to three years to ensure it has plenty of room to root and spread. When repotting, move the plant up one pot size and be sure to use soil that is well-draining and has plenty of organic matter.
The Black Mondo Grass does not require frequent pruning and can be trimmed as you desire for a more tailored look. If pruning is needed, trim with garden shears, taking only the tips of the plant. Be careful when pruning as the plants tend to grow back quickly and can become overgrown if too much is removed.
Black Mondo Grass does not require mulching but it can help the soil from drying out. If you choose to mulch the plant, make sure to use a light layer of organic matter like bark chips or pebbles.
