Black Magic Ti Plant
The Black Magic Ti Plant (Cordyline fruticosa 'Black Magic') is an evergreen shrub with lush architectural foliage, commonly used as an ornamental in outdoor patio play areas and tropical botanical gardens. A highly versatile and tough plant, it’s relatively easy to grow despite its tropical-looking nature and makes a great addition to any outdoor area. Thanks to its robust nature, Black Magic Ti Plant is also an excellent choice for use indoors, in containers and hanging baskets. Its conical shape provides texture and color to any corner of your home and really makes a statement. Native to the Asia-Pacific region, from tropical and sub-tropical Southeast Asia, the south Pacific Islands and Northern Australia, the Black Magic Ti Plant comes with stunning green and pink foliage that stands out, and, depending on the time of year, produces clusters of tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that further enhance its supreme beauty.
The plant does appreciate a thorough soaking once a week, especially during the warmest months of the summer. Drain the excess water from the soil and add more if needed, making sure the soil is damp but not soggy. To test the moisture level, insert your finger into the soil, if it feels humid, then you do not need to water it. During cold winters, and in other seasons, you can water the plant fewer times and less intensely.
The Black Magic Ti Plant thrives best in full sun, meaning it needs six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day, although it is fairly tolerant of partial shade. Growing in well-lit indirect sunlight is also possible and less intense sunlight is ok, but the light should always be bright enough for dark green leaves to be visible with various hues of pink. During the usually colder months of winter, it is recommended to move the plant from outdoors to a well-lit inside environment.
Black Magic Ti Plant is cold tolerant, it does extremely well at temperatures between 50 - 90°F (10 - 32°C). Anything above or below this range may cause the leaves to turn yellow and die anyway. Avoid anything below 50°F (10°C) and above 90°F (32°C). As mentioned, an ideal room temperature is between 66 and 79oF (19-26°C) for optimal growth.
The Black Magic Ti plant appreciates high humidity levels, especially during the winter months when the air tends to become dryer indoors than outdoors. During the summer, the levels become more regulated due to the natural influence of the daily rain and the heat. If the plant is placed in air-conditioned environment, it will require more humidity, and the use of a humidifier is recommended. An easy, cost-effective way of increasing humidity levels is to spray the foliage with tepid water in the morning and evening.
For best results, use any all-purpose potting soil when repotting the Black Magic Ti Plant. Alternatively, a peat-based potting mix, enhanced with perlite and sand, is also suitable for this type of shrubbery. The soil should be light and well drained and slightly acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.0), as it helps the soil to keep the proper moisture and nutrient balance. Make sure the soil does not dry out and there is no standing water at any time.
As any other houseplant, you may fertilize your Black Magic Ti Plant every two weeks with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer. It’s essential to prepare the problem according to the manufacturer’s instructions and only apply it to a wet soil. Once the solution starts to dry, stop applying and reduce watering until the next fertilizing session. This type of plant does not need much nourishment during the winter months, so you may lay off the fertilizer until spring.
Black Magic Ti plants are not immune to pests, especially during hot and humid climates. Common pests to look out for include spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, thrips, and scale insects, that usually attack the underside of the leaves. To manage them, start by introducing the non-toxic predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, as a natural form of pest control. As a secondary measure, cut the affected leaves, and spray the plant with a liquid pest control solution designed for house plants. Finally, avoid overwatering the plant, as excess moisture can attract pests. Make sure to repeat the procedure if necessary as the pest infestation may come back.
During the active growing season, it’s good to repot the Black Magic Ti Plant every two to three years to ensure the best possible soil conditions for growth. Since it’s a slow grower plant, when transplanting, selecting a new pot only 1” or 2” larger than its current one is recommended. It’s best to do this procedure either early spring or late autumn.
The Black Magic Ti plant requires occasional pruning to keep it in prime condition and prevent an unkept look. The best time to prune is during the first weeks of spring. Prune away dead and damaged leaves and stems, as well as excessive growth. Use a pair of scissors or pruning shears, and cut the stems just above a node or a ring of leaves. Avoid cutting the main stem.
Mulching is not necessary but can improve the overall appearance of the shrub. Organic mulch, such as chopped leaf mould, bark chippings, or coco fibre, helps the soil retain moisture, prevents weeds, and keeps the root system well insulated against temperatures extremes.
Like other varieties of Ti Plants, the Black Magic Ti Plant can be propagated quite easily from cuttings. You can also use a portion of the stem ready, or, rooted if available. With a rooting hormone, plant your stem in a light potting soil mix. Place it in a warmer environment and provide the soil with ample, but indirect sunlight. Once the stem and new leaves start to grow, transitioning to normal light conditions is advised.
The Black Magic Ti Plant is a very sturdy plant; however, it’s important to provide it with a bit of support to keep the stem from falling or sagging. You can use plant stakes or twine to secure the stem in an upright position and help the stem to grow stronger over time.
The Black Magic Ti Plant does have a dormant period, usually in autumn or beginning of winter, when growth slows down and the plant enters 'hibernation'. During this time, it needs less water. Decrease your watering schedule so as to provide the plant with adequate nutrition, as overwatering is very likely to occur, and be aware that the plant may either shed its leaves or stop producing new ones.
Black Magic Ti Plant is not toxic to pets, making it a good choice both indoors and outdoor if you have furry friends at home.
