Asparagus Sprengeri
Asparagus Sprengeri, or Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri', is a slow-growing, evergreen, perennial fern native to South Africa. It is commonly grown in homes and gardens for its trailing branches and foliage, with its bright green, feathery foliage is appreciated for its air-purifying properties. Long and stringy leaves are topped with small pointed, deep green leaflets. Its cascading habit lends itself well to being put around or in hang pots, spilling its foliage over the sides. The small, white flowers that appear in spring create a pleasant aroma when in bloom.
For healthy growth, Asparagus Sprengeri needs regular watering. The soil should be kept moist, but not wet. Do not overwater; allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. During winter, when the plant is dormant, water even less often. Allow the soil to become almost dry between watering.
Asparagus Sprengeri prefers bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun if filtered. It is also suitable for low light areas. Avoid strong direct sunlight, as the leaves may burn and turn yellow. It can be grown indoors, as long as it's given enough light. If put outdoors in the growing season, keep in a shady area.
Asparagus Sprengeri requires temperatures between 65 - 80°F (18 - 27°C). It can survive temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) for short periods, but only for a few days. In the colder months, consider bringing your plant inside or in an area where it is not exposed to temperatures lower than 55°F (13°C).
This plant appreciates humid conditions, but is very tolerant of lower humidity. During the summer, it's a good idea to mist it with a spray bottle, while during the winter you can keep a tray of water under its pot and keep the leaves clean with a damp cloth.
Asparagus Sprengeri grows best in soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.5– 6.5. A good soil mix for Asparagus Sprengeri should contain one-third each of perlite, peat moss, and loam. Ensure the potting mix is well drained and contains adequate organic material.
Feed your Asparagus Sprengeri during the spring and summer months, with a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer. Do not fertilize during fall and winter, when the plant is dormant. After every fertilization, water the soil lightly to allow the fertilizer to be absorbed by the roots. It’s best to fertilize a plant that has been well-watered, as the fertilizer could burn the roots if the soil is dry.
Asparagus Sprengeri is generally quite hardy and can tolerate a few pests. Common pests of this species include mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, scale insects and spider mites. Keep an eye out for pests and act quickly to eliminate them, before they feast on your plant. You can physically remove the pests with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or spray the plant with an appropriate pesticide.
Every three to four years, young Asparagus Sprengeri plants will need to be re-potted into a container one size larger. When the plant outgrows its container, it needs to be moved to a larger one or divided and re-planted. Choose a container with drainage holes in the bottom and use well-draining potting soil. When repotting, ensure to to provide adequate drainage and to lightly water the soil so it's moist but not saturated.
A regular pruning regimen will help Asparagus Sprengeri to remain compact and healthy. To prune, trim the tips of the stems to keep the plant bushy and discourage legginess. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to ensure smooth cuts and reduce the possibility of infection. Prune in the spring, when the new growth begins to form.
Mulching can help to keep soil temperatures cool and prevent water loss from the root system. A layer of organic mulch around the crown of the plant will help slow down water loss through evaporation, promote healthy root growth, and help to create a healthier environment for the plant.
To propagate, use stem cuttings of about 4-5 inches in length. The cuttings should be taken from the tip of the stems that have new growth. Once you have the cuttings, use a sharp and sterile knife or pruning shears to remove the lower leaves from the stem. Dip the cuttings into a hormone rooting powder, then place them in moistened potting soil. Make sure the soil is moist, but not saturated. The cuttings should take about 1-3 weeks to root; once rooted, you can transfer them to their own pot.
Asparagus Sprengeri needs support when grown in hang pots. The stems tend to get long and stringy when it is not given proper support, so consider using a stake or trellis to keep them in place. You can also use twist ties or string to tie each stem to the support for a few weeks.
Asparagus Sprengeri doesn’t require a period of dormancy; however, this does not mean it shouldn’t get a break. During the winter months, the plant does benefit from reduced watering and it can use the time to recover from the growing season. Reduce the watering but don’t let the soil completely dry out. If planted outdoors, protect it from the chilly temperatures.
This plant is not toxic to pets, but it might be poisonous if it is eaten in large quantities. To be safe, it is best to keep pets away from plants. If they nibble on the leaves, you can observe if any unfavorable reactions occur.
