Paperwhite Narcissus
Paperwhite Narcissus (Narcissus papyraceus) is an evergreen perennial bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. It produces bright white flowers with a delicate scent and can easily be propagated by bulb offsets and helps to brighten up any home. It's one of the easiest and most fragrant plants to cultivate for indoor gardening. It requires minimal care and with its beautiful white flowers, it's hard to resist.
Watering the Paperwhite Narcissus plant can be tricky since it needs to be watered just enough so it doesn't dry out completely. In the spring and summer, water moderately until the top inch of the soil is moist and allow the pot to dry out between waterings. In the winter, water even less, allowing the soil to almost dry out between waterings. In general, water when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch.
Paperwhite Narcissus does best in bright, indirect sunlight, preferably keep it 5-7 feet away from windows and direct sunlight. It may flower and grow better in bright light but can tolerate short-term exposure to direct sun. Too much direct sunlight may burn the leaves of Paperwhite Narcissus, so make sure the plant is getting some filtered light for at least 6 hours a day. In winter, you may want to give the Paperwhite a break from bright light and move it to a dimmer spot like a north-facing window.
Paperwhite Narcissus enjoys temperatures between 50-86°F (10-30°C). During the cooler winter months, the plant should be kept at temperatures around 6o°F (20°C) and up. Make sure the temperature does not drop below 50°F(10°C) as the roots can freeze at lower temperatures.
Paperwhite Narcissus prefers to be in a humid environment. When it's grown indoors, it’s best to keep the relative humidity between 50-60%. To increase the humidity, you can mist the leaves with water or use a humidity tray or humidifier. Make sure the air is not too dry and is constantly humid for the plant to thrive.
Paperwhite Narcissus needs well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A mixture of peat moss and perlite or sand is perfect for the plant. Make sure the soil is moist but still allows sufficient drainage of water. Also, avoid putting the plant in an overly wet and soggy soil, which may lead to root rot.
Paperwhite Narcissus should be fertilized monthly from early spring to late fall. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer and follow the instructions on the label. Too much fertilizer will cause the plant to burn, so make sure to feed the plant in moderation. Foliar feeding can also be done, but make sure to mist the plant before fertilizing and after fertilizing to wash off the excess fertilizer from the plant’s leaves.
Paperwhite Narcissus is prone to some common pests. The most common are aphids, which may be present on the stems and leaves. To get rid of aphids, spray the plants with water or an insecticidal soap. Make sure to do this often and keep the area clean to prevent infestation. Spider mites and mealybugs can also be a problem; they can be removed by using a cotton bud or a diluted solution of horticultural oil. Keep an eye out for any signs of pests and take proper action immediately.
The Paperwhite Narcissus should be repotted every one or two years in spring when the plant is dormant. Repotting helps to rejuvenate the soil which will provide a better environment for the plant to grow in. Make sure to use a slightly bigger pot than the previous one and use well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Make sure to leave enough space around the rootball when repotting.
Pruning is not required for the Paperwhite Narcissus plant; however, if you wish to do so, pruning should be done after the blooms have faded. Use clean sharp scissors and trim off any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking healthy and in shape. Make sure to only prune what is necessary to keep the size and shape of the plant in check.
Mulching is beneficial for all plants, especially thePaperwhite Narcissus. Mulch helps in retaining moisture and prevents weeds from growing around the plant. It also helps to reduce the risk of diseases like root rot due to damp or wet soil. Make sure to use organic mulch like bark chips or shredded leaves and change the mulch every year or two.
Paperwhite Narcissus can be propagated by separating the bulbs from the mother plant. This should be done in spring or summer after the blooming season is over. Gently remove the bulbs from the soil and make sure not to damage them. Plant them in a pot filled with well-draining soil and provide them with bright, indirect light and moderate water. In a few weeks, the plants will start to establish and will bloom in a few months.
Paperwhite Narcissus usually does not need staking because the stems will grow straight. However, in case of heavy blooms or if the pollen from the flowers is too heavy, you may need to provide some support with a stake or a trellis to keep the stems upright.
Paperwhite Narcissus needs a rest period of about 8-10 weeks in fall and winter to stay healthy. During this time, the amount of light and water should be reduced. The plant should also be kept in cooler temperatures. This rest period helps the plant to recharge and to produce better and more beautiful blooms during the next blooming season.
Paperwhite Narcissus is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. The bulbs and leaves of the plant contain toxic components that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. If you own a pet, it is best to keep this plant away from their reach or out of your home.
