Maranta

Maranta, or prayer plants, are an increasingly popular group of houseplants, known for their vibrant leaves, easy care, and interesting foliage. Maranta comprises of evergreen perennials from the Marantaceae family, and occur naturally in the tropics from Mexico and The Caribbean to as far as northeast Brazil and parts of West Africa. The genus symbolism draws its root from the Italian botanist, Pietro Andrea Mattioli who called them “Maranta” in honor of Bartolomeo Maranta, a 16th century Italian physician and botanist. Maranta are also referred to as emergency plants because of their tendency to droop their leaves during the evening as if in prayer—a unique feature among plants. Maranta feature prominent, eye-catching foliage that can last for months and can set an attractive look to any home.
