King Protea
The King Protea (Protea cynaroides), also known as Giant Protea, is an ornamental evergreen shrub of the Proteaceae family native to South Africa. It is the largest of all the flower species from the genus Protea, reaching a height of 3m and 4m in diameter, with striking large and showy pink or white flowers. The large flower heads can be dried and used in an array of floral arrangements, and the plant itself has become a widely popular ornamental landscape plant. This robust and hardy plant has a shallow root system and can survive in poor-draining, infertile soils.
King Protea likes even moisture around its roots and prefers well-draining soils. Water regularly as soon as the soil around the roots becomes dry. In warm climates, it may require more frequent watering during hot summers and periodically in winter. In cooler climates, water it about once every week if there is no rain.
King Protea requires full sun to partial shade for optimal growth, but its foliage is sensitive to harsh, direct sunlight and can become easily damaged. Keeping the plant in bright, indirect light will help it thrive.
King Protea can tolerate moderate temperatures, thriving in temperatures ranging from 40-85 F (4-29°C). Cold temperatures below 33°F (1°C) can harm the plant, so if left outdoors it should be sheltered from the winter cold.
King Protea prefers average humidity levels, but can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels, from dry desert air to tropical humidity. Keep the humidity levels as consistent as possible throughout the year.
King Protea prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil with plenty of organic matter and a pH of around 6.5. When planting in a pot, use a mixture of equal parts potting soil, perlite, and peat moss.
King Protea requires regular fertilization to reach its full potential. Fertilize it once every month during its active growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. It is not necessary to fertilize during its dormancy period.
King Protea is generally pest-free though can sometimes be attacked by aphids. As a first step for pest control, spray the plant with a gentle stream of water to knock off any insects. If more drastic measures are needed, insecticides labeled for use on trees and plants can be used. Make sure to read the label carefully before applying.
King Protea is a slow-growing plant, so repotting is not necessary every year. It should be repotted every two to three years, or when the soil starts drying out quickly between waterings. When repotting, be sure to use a potting soil blend that has good drainage.
Young King Protea shrubs should undergo light pruning to encourage new healthy growth. Prune off any dead or unhealthy branches to make way for new vigorous growth. Heavy pruning should be avoided in order to preserve the plant’s natural shape.
Mulching King Protea with organic material such as wood chips, bark, leaves, and grass clippings will help the plant retain moisture in the soil and also protect it from extreme temperatures. It can also help to control weeds.
King Protea can be propagated by cuttings. In the spring or summer, take 10-15cm cuttings with 3-4 nodes and plant them in a mixture of equal parts potting soil, perlite, and peat moss. Cover the cuttings with a plastic bag and place them in a bright, warm area. Keep the soil lightly moist and make sure the cuttings get adequate humidity. New roots should be visible in 6-8 weeks.
When king Protea is young, it may need to be supported while it is growing. Stakes or bamboo poles can be used to help the plant grow upright.
King Protea has an active growth phase in the spring and summer months. In winter, the plant will enter a dormancy period and will need less water and fertilizer. During this period, it can be pruned to maintain its desired shape.
King Protea is not considered toxic to pets.
