Eyelash Fern
Eyelash Fern, or Cheilanthes lanosa, is an evergreen fern species native to the southwestern United States. It has lacy fronds, that can reach heights up to two feet, which have small hairs that give it an overall fuzzy look. The leaves are triangular in shape and range in color from dark green to gray-green. Some even have a hint of purple to them. The dark glossy look of the leaves is a great addition to any garden or interior space.
This plant loves you to keep it evenly moist during the growing season, but it does not want to be left in standing water. During winter water it just enough to keep the soil from drying out completely, but be careful as it is deciduous and does not like to be overwatered. A good rule of thumb is to water it every two weeks in colder months, and once a week in the warmer months.
Eyelash Fern is best grown in low to medium indirect light. If placed in an area with too much sun, the leaves will start to become dry and crisp which will lead to potential dieback. It also prefers to have some shade in the afternoons during the hot summer temperatures, so it's best to look for partially shaded areas or dappled sunlight. It's important to maintain the light levels consistently throughout the year to ensure optimal growth of the plant.
This fern does not like extreme temperatures, the ideal temperature range is 64–73°F (18–23°C). The plant will start to wilt and become limp if exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C). It can tolerate temperatures up to 95°F (35°C) as long as it is kept moist.
This plant loves humid environments and will do best if the humidity level is kept at 50-60%. To achieve this, mist the plant once or twice a day with a spray bottle. To ensure the soil stays moist and the humidity levels remain high, stand the pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles.
The best soil for this plant is a lightweight, fast-draining one. The soil should contain organic matter and either peat moss or perlite to aerate the roots. It should be slightly acidic with a pH of 5.5 - 6.5, and the soil should never be wet or soggy.
Eyelash Fern should be fertilized regularly during its growing season. It is best to use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks, and fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer once every month. It is important to make sure that the fertilizer is designed for use on houseplants, and to follow the instructions on the label to ensure proper use and application.
Common pests infesting the Eyelash Fern include spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs. To get rid of these pests, check your plant regularly and treat any infested areas as soon as possible. One natural solution is to spray the plant with a combination of alcohol and water. Alternatively, you can also mix Neem oil and water, or soap and water, and spray the infested areas of the plant. It may take several treatments for the problem to be resolved.
Eyelash Fern should be repotted every year in the spring. It should be repotted into a pot with drainage holes, and should be filled with a light, porous potting soil. When repotting, ensure that the root ball is not overcrowded and the plant has plenty of room for growth. It is also important to apply a water-soluble fertilizer to the soil after repotting.
Pruning is necessary to promote air flow and to keep the plant in shape. Pruning should be done once a year if the plant has become too big or leggy, or if there is a need to get rid of damaged leaves. To do so, use sharp, sterilized scissors and cut away any yellow or brown leaves. If there are any dead fronds, they should also be removed.
Mulching with wood chips or compost is beneficial for Eyelash Ferns, as it enhances soil fertility and helps keep the soil moist. It is important to use an organic material that is designed for potting soil to avoid any build-up of salts in the soil, and to ensure that the soil drains well. A light layer of mulch should be applied in the spring and should be replaced as it decomposes.
Eyelash Ferns can easily be propagated from division. The best time to do this is in the early spring or late fall. To propagate the plant, use a sharp knife to separate the divisions into smaller, individual plants. Plant the divisions in individual pots filled with a light, porous soil, and keep the soil consistently moist. The new plants should be placed in an area with low to medium indirect light.
Eyelash Ferns can be propogated by division, but they need some support to keep them upright. They should be placed in an area with some sun to keep them from becoming leggy. If the plant becomes top-heavy, you can use a trellis or stakes to give it some extra support.
Eyelash Fern does not require a rest period, but it is advisable to give it a slight resting period during the winter months. During this time, reduce watering and keep it in an area with low light. This will help to encourage more dense growth and keep it in tip-top shape.
Eyelash Fern is not toxic to humans or pets. However, it is best not to allow pets to consume large amounts of the plant, as it can cause stomach irritation.
