Echinopsis
Echinopsis spp., more commonly known as the Easter Lily Cactus or the Hedgehog cactus, is a genus of cacti native to South America. Being desert plants, they require very little water and will thrive in dry, sunny, and dry climates. They are characterized by their large, cup-shaped blooms that open in the evening and often have a sweet scent. Large species can grow up to two and a half feet tall and are often used in succulent and rock gardens. Echinopsis can be propagated both through division and seed propagation.
Echinopsis cacti are very drought tolerant and need to dry out completely between waterings. They can tolerate occasional neglect and will forgive some light over-watering, but should generally not be kept in constantly wet soil. During the hotter months, water every two to three weeks. During the cooler months, water sparingly, or even not at all in colder climates. If the plants are kept indoors, they will need less water than if they are kept outdoors. Over-watering is usually the cause of most Echinopsis problems, so make sure the soil is well-draining and sandy.
Echinopsis cacti prefer bright, direct light or a spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. They can tolerate full sun without burning, but can also grow in bright, indirect light. Morning or afternoon sun is best, as during the hottest part of the day, it may be beneficial to place a light diffusing cloth or filter to prevent scorching. When keeping indoors, try to place in a sunny spot in the home near a window, as the more light there is, the more flowers Echinopsis will produce.
Echinopsis cacti prefer warm temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing season and slightly cooler temperatures at around 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit during the rest period. Keep temperatures above 25 degrees Fahrenheit when the plants are kept indoors. Avoid exposing the plant to temperature swings and sudden changes in temperature.
Echinopsis cacti prefer a dry environment with low humidity. Keep the humidity level of the room below 40%. If the humidity is too high, it can cause root rot or other issues. To increase the airflow around the plant, use a fan and make sure its location has adequate space between other objects and furniture.
The ideal soil for Echinopsis cacti is a gritty soil mix that is well-draining and contains at least 50 percent inorganic matter such as perlite and pumice. Soil mixes specifically formulated for cacti and succulents are best, but otherwise, use a basic potting soil and add sand, perlite, and other additives as needed for good drainage.
Echinopsis cacti require minimal fertilization but benefit from a monthly application during the growing season. Use a balanced fertilizer formulated specifically for cacti and reduce the amount of nitrogen, as this is not necessary for the plant. Do not fertilize while the plant is in its rest period, as overfertilization can damage the roots and make the plant prone to disease.
Echinopsis cacti are usually pest free, but some may be vulnerable to mealybugs, aphids, or scale insects. Mealybugs can be prevented by using an appropriate insecticide. To control aphids and scale insects, use an appropriate pesticide or a solution of soap, water, and neem oil. Monitor the plant regularly and treat as necessary.
Echinopsis cacti do not need to be repotted frequently as they are slow-growing. Generally, they will only need to be repotted when they become root bound or the pot becomes too small for the plant's size. When repotting, use a pot with adequate drainage holes and a soil specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. Make sure to use sterilized tools as soil diseases can be easily spread.
Echinopsis cacti require minimal pruning and should only be pruned when necessary. Pruning should only be done when the plant has become significantly overgrown or has outgrown its pot. If the plant does need pruning, always use a sharp, sterilized tool and be sure to clean all tools and your hands both before and after. Avoid pruning more than 10 percent of the plant's total mass at one time.
Mulching around the base of an Echnopsis cactus can help regulate soil temperatures, conserve water, and improve fertility around the plant. Use an organic matter that will break down over time, such as wood chips, pine husks, compost, or manure.
Echinopsis cacti can be propagated either through division or from seed. If propagating from seed, plant them just below the soil surface in a sterile potting mix and keep damp. Plants grown from seeds often take longer to bloom and may not flower until two to five years after planting. When propagating through division, use a sharp knife and cut through the cactus carefully, making sure each division has healthy roots and holds together. Plant the division in a light soil mix and keep moist until the new plant is established.
Echinopsis cacti generally do not need additional support, but occasionally do need help standing upright if they become top heavy or when growing in a small pot. In these cases, use thin stakes or bamboo skewers to stake the cactus to limit its potential for toppling over.
Echinopsis cacti require a winter rest period. During this time, gradually decrease Water and fertiliser until growth slows and stops. Keep the plant in a cool room and once growth resumes, increase the water and fertiliser and begin to move it to a sunnier spot.
Echinopsis cacti are not toxic to pets, but some species have thorns and spines that can be an irritant to dogs and cats. Keep curious pets away from this plant, as the thorns can cause injury if touched.
